Top seed Roger Federer crushed 6th seed Andy Roddick in straight sets by the score of 6-4, 6-0, 6-2!! He will meet the winner of Tommy Haas vs. Fernando Gonzalez match.
On the women side, top seed Maria Sharapova defeated the 4th seed Kim Clijsters in straight sets by the score of 6-4, 6-2. Unseeded Serena Williams had a harder time with the 10th seed Nicole Vaidisova but still won in straight sets by the score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to meet Sharapova in the final.
Prediction?
Mine is Federer and Sharapova will take home the Australian Open Tennis Crown.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
You can’t be serious–picking both no.1 seeds to win? What a gambit!
Then why doesn’t she learn the proper spelling of Kim Clijsters? She knows (tens of) thousands of chess positions by heart, memorizing a name shouldn’t really hurt.
zoobee? what are you talking about? are you on medication? that’s how you spell Clijsters. don’t forget your medication today.
federer and sharapova will win…

I’m guessing next to chess, tennis is Susan’s favorite sport. I really can’t argue with that.
chess is board game not a sport….
tennis has a real world champion he can play 3 to 5 sets in over 100dec heat for 5 to six hours…and no 50 toilet breaks no cheating no Putin wins everthing and no draws…chess is a disgrace at the top
Federer has won all 18 sets he’s played.
kramnik has won 2 out of 10 games..he should give the game away
PS chess kids are great they deserve a real champion to look up to
Federer made Roddick look like he does not know how to play tennis. An awesome display of the art of tennis. Other than Federer, Hingis is the only player who is capable of playing such touch-tennis.
Federer + Williams.
I predict that Sharapova will continue to look beautiful and cold.
Clijsters fan, no, don’t worry, she just has read the comment and updated this post, without commenting here, sorta making me glow. At 10:31 AM EST she still has the same typo(?) a few posts lower (earlier). Actually, the first time I thought it had been a typo, that’s why I didn’t tell. Anyway, too much been said already.
Back to my medications, sincerely.
I think zoobee just wants some love or medication. I didn’t see any wrong spelling. Perhaps new glasses?
Sharapov
Love the bicep on Serena’s pic.
Well, Federer gave a master class and Roddick is still watching were the ball went…
I wish the final would be between Federer and Gonzalez (he is a solid top ten level player now) maybe, if Federer is not so marvelous as today we will have a good final match.
As for the women final, I think Sharapova will win, but not easily. Serena has proved to be a fighter at Melbourne.
P.S.: Serena seems a “bit” overweighted, her photo is not from Melbourn 2007. Ah! And chess is a sport too, as it is an art and a science. At least it was in the old format: 24 game matches – 2 months of continued struggle and stress.
love the pectorals on sharapova’s pic
“chess is board game not a sport….”
Tennis is an court game, not a sport.
I agree with men’s but Williams will beat Sharapova!
Federer is the best
possible best ever
Federer is the best ever – Agassi
even said so before he retired and
he played for 20 years. Laver and Sampras were the only tennis players so far who seemed more
dominant. Federer’s only real competition is Nadal (on clay only).
By the way, chess is a sport. I’ve
played more tennis than most peo-
ple and I can tell you that chess
is even more exhausting than tennis.
My picks: Federer and Sharapova
Great Susan. I didn’t know you like tennis too. I play it fairly well. How about you?
In tennis, there is a concept of constructing a point by playing series of strokes to set up a attack or counter attack.
In chess, there is a similarity too.
Certainly chess can be considered a sport … it’s a competition of skill. It’s just that athleticism is not a required skill for chess, like it is for tennis. Here’s a few questions to ponder – Is figure skating a sport? If you answer yes, then is ballet also a sport? How about trapeze?
Memories of her slain half-sister inspired Williams to a 6-1, 6-2 win over top-seeded Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open final — her eighth Grand Slam title, her first since winning here in 2005, and her most improbable.
“It was an awesome win, because I had so many critics. So many people … saying negative things,” Williams said. “It’s like, tell me no and I’ll show you that I can do it. I get the greatest satisfaction just holding up the Grand Slam trophy and proving everyone wrong.”
