Twelve-year-olds win 8 of 9 games in chess grand prix

THE final of the Gladstone Chess Club Junior Grand Prix Tournaments was played out yesterday with a field of 17 players.

The leading game winners were 12-year-olds Kyle Stevens and Aaron Fahey who both won eight out of nine games.

On count back it was Kyle who took first place.

Coming in third was Malik Gregg on seven points.

The second division ended on a tie of five points for both Chrisny Fernando and Camen McMillan, but it was new member Chrisny who came first after count back.

John Polvi placed third on four points.

Chrisny played solid chess causing upsets over Josh Stanton and Aishwarya Chandrasekara.

The children also completed two and three move checkmate puzzles, which were won by Agasthi Fernando and John Polvi.

Aaron Fahey was declared 2012 Grand Prix Tournament winner with a total of 66.5 points.

Coming in second was Josh Stanton on 46.5 points, whilst Kyle Stevens and Isaac Fahey tied for third on 44.5 points.
