STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The final day of the Beatrice Victor Senior Olympics saw a spirited chess competition, a new golf course to swing on and pleasant rivalries that left participants holding medals and wearing smiles.

The brand-new canasta competition saw 44 players — mostly women — sign up for the privilege to compete, said Sheila Siegel, one of four game chairpersons.

“It was slightly competitive, but everyone was very friendly and it was a warm atmosphere,” she said. Of course, topping it off were the offerings of coffee, cake, candy and other goodies.

Chess:

Ed Selling, gold; Peter Piertras, silver; Fima Skibinsky, bronze.
