State senators to play chess at Northeast High

PASADENA — State Sen. Bryan Simonaire will join two other lawmakers Wednesday in the first of three chess matches against high school students.
State Sens. Jamie Raskin, D-Montgomery, and Ulysses Currie, D-Prince George’s, will join the Pasadena Republican at Northeast High School for their first High School Chess Challenge game. A second game will be played in Currie’s district on Jan. 16 and a final game will take place at an unspecified date in Montgomery County.
Simonaire said the games are designed to promote chess in high schools. All three senators play in the annual Senate vs. House chess competition, and Currie tried in the past to pass legislation allowing chess to be taught as an elective. Simonaire and Raskin have co-sponsored the unsuccessful bill.
“There is much educationally to be offered by the game of chess,” Simonaire said Monday in a statement announcing the games.
Three students will play the senators. The games will use a tournament clock, and each player will be allowed a maximum of 30 minutes at the board before having to hand off. The games will last no more than one hour.
This is Simonaire’s latest chess game in schools. He’s played students at Sunset Elementary School for six years, and last year expanded to George Fox Middle.
