Stars battle for Olympiad places

THE chess fraternity is at the Pope Paul Memorial Hotel for the second phase of the Olympiad qualifiers.

The latest phase will run for two days starting on Saturday.

So far, national champions Arthur Ssegwanyi in the men’s category and Grace Kigeni in the women’s category have secured qualification for the Olympiad due in Turkey in August.

Uganda Chess Federation will enter a team of 10 players for the world’s biggest chess show.

The group includes on-form ex-Olympian Harold Wanyama, junior champion Haruna Nsubuga, Shadrack Kantinti, Kenneth Kakooza and Geoffrey Kanduho.

Fellow ex-Olympians Ivy Amoko, Phiona Mutesi, Rita Nsubuga and Christine Namaganda will be in action.

The full team for the competition in Turkey will be known after the final phase of the qualifiers slated for next month.
