CHESS classes for children are bing offered in St Kilda East.

Port Phillip resident Michael Gluzman, a former Ukrainian professional chess coach and international chess master, will be hosting the classes.

Classes for school children are planned for Sundays at the Alma Rd Community House.

“Now I have to take my son to play chess and we don’t have a good club here, so I thought I might start one,” Mr Gluzman said.

Rocheleh Ziffer, 18, has been playing chess since she was eight.

“It really helps you with your VCE study skills and patterns,” she said.

“It helps to develop problem-solving skills and an ability to focus and shows your analysis and developing strategies which all help academically when you get to high school.

“Chess is a life-long knowledge and it’s always good to have and it’s not something you can forget.”
