I live in New York. The two Major League Baseball teams here are the legendary 26-time World Champion New York Yankees and 2-time World Champion New York Mets.
These two teams ended the regular season tied with the best records (97-65) in Major League Baseball. Everyday, I hear on the news countless debates about which team is better and which team would win if they face each other in the Subway Series.
While most of these debates are friendly but passionate, there are always a few lunatics who make obnoxious insults and sometimes they go as far as making physical threats to others who do not agree with them.
How many times have we seen the same thing in soccer matches? That is why during times like this, chess fans need to unite and respect each other more. Additional hostility and insults will do nothing but destroy chess even further.
Fighting after football matches is one of the main reasons for that sport’s popularity over here in England! I do not see hooliganism catching on in chess though.
Do not insult Kramnik then Susan Polgar.
Hi Susan,
As a life-long Yankee fan, I hate to correct you, but the Yankees have won the World Series only 26 times, not 27. In about a month, your count will be accurate!
Jeff, good one 🙂 Thanks for the correction.
May the best team win 🙂
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

“….26-time World Champion New York Yankees and 2-time World Champion New York Mets.”
Are the NBA winners still called “World Champions”, too?
On that thought, why isn’t the USA champion also the World Champion?
Because the USA is not the world?
Although, the designation of the US or sometimes N.American playoff is often billed as the “World Championship of…”
I can see the validity in sports like cheerleading competition where there might not be representation at all from other parts of the world, but otherwise…

As a European, I really don’t have the faintest idea what baseball is about or what the Yankees or the Mets stand for.
The appeal to respect each other and unite is not lost upon me, though.
There’s nothing I would like better than to unite with other chess fans respectfully under any flag, as long as it is not the FIDE flag.
If you take the initiative here, Susan, we will all be glad to follow!
Sorry but my Dodgers are going to beat the Mets so it will be NY Yankees vs Dodgers but no #27, Dodgers all the way!!!!
When I was a lad, the World Series was played in the first 10 days or so of October. Beautiful weather, nothing else important going on. The whole country focused on it.
Now we have to suffer through 41 playoff games.
Who cares?
