In round six of the SPICE Cup, GM Varuzhan Akobian won a sparkling game against GM Stefansson to join Victor Mikhalevski in the SPICE Cup lead. (Lubbock, TX, Sept 19-29) Before playing through the entire Akobian- Stefansson game in the Tarrasch line of the Queen’s Gambit, try to find his moves in the following three positions.

Varuzhan and Victor now lead with 4/6, but there are four players just half a point behind him, so it’s anyone’s tournament.

2008 SPICE Cup – Round Six
September 19-28 in Lubbock, USA

Round six of the 2008 SPICE Cup, the highest rated 10-player chess tournament in U.S. history, is currently underway at the Texas Tech University Student Union Building. Israeli Grandmaster Victor Mikhalevski was holding the lead after five rounds, half a point ahead of the bulk of players. Victor is genuine chess globetrotter, having already visited around 70 countries when I last asked.

Update: Mikhalevski drew Becerra in round six and Akobian beat Stefansson to join him on the first place tie.
