1.d6 almost without thinking about it. The point is to cut off black’s rook from h6. If black takes with the king, then white pushes h6, and if black takes with the rook, then Bc5 pins the rook and wins the game.
White can win with 1. d6+! B two choices:
A. 1…R:d6 2 Bc5 and black’s K must run to stop the h-pawn, so White wins the R.
B. 1…K:d6 2. h7 Ra8 3. h8Q R:h8 4. B:h8.
Although B is stronger – it wins both the h and d pawns for the R, both variations are lost for Black.
1. d6 blocks h6 from Black’s rook (1. … Kxd6 2. h7 Ra8 3. h8(Q) Rxh8 4. Bxh8; 1. … Rxd6 2. Bc5), which allows White to get Black’s rook for no more than 2 pawns.
