UTD – The University of Texas at Dallas

The University of Texas at Dallas is one of the many universities in America that supports Chess and believes in the benefits of chess for young people. However, the chess program at UTD really stands out. Each year, UTD awards a number of chess scholarships to bright and talented students.

UTD chess teams have captured countless National Collegiate Titles over the years. The teams consist of a number of Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters and many other strong players. Most important of all, the players receive excellent education and the graduation rate is extremely high.

Heading the wonderful chess program is Dr. Tim Redman (Director, 2-time past President of the USCF). He is assisted by Jim Stallings (Associate Director / Recruiter), Luis Salinas (Assistant Director), IM Rade Milovanovic (team coach) and Dr. WIM Alexey Root (Chess in Education – Past Chairperson of the USCF Women’s Committee).

I visited the magnificent campus of UTD in 2003 and met with many faculty members. The University is doing an incredible job bringing College Chess and Chess in Education to the forefront. For more information about the UTD Chess Program, please visit http://chessweb.utdallas.edu/index.html. UTD hopes to inspire more colleges and universities to support chess.

I am proud to say that I received the first “Educator Of The Year Award” from UTD in 2003. UTD is also a major supporter of the Annual Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls.
