Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So of the Philippines drew his seventh-round match with American GM Eugene Perelshteyn to remain on track in the 2010 SPICE Cup chess championship at the Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

So and Perelshteyn decided to split the point after 42 moves of the Queen’s Gambit Declined Exchange variation. So improved his score to nine points on two wins, three draws and two losses in this six-player, category-16 tournament.

The 17-year-old Filipino master is five points behind American GMs Alexander Onsichuk and George Meier of Germany. Onischuk ripped Meier in 35 moves of the Catalan.

Joining So in the third to fourth places is top seed GM Zoltan Almasi of Hungary who also halved the point with American GM Ray Robson.

So will tackle Robson in the eighth round. He defeated Robson in their first meeting last week.
Meanwhile, So wound up second to Meier in the SPICE Cup blitz chess tournament.

So got five wins, one draw and one loss to clinch runner-up honors with 5.5 points, half a point behind Meier. He earned a runner-up prize of $300.

So defeated International Master (IM) Bryan Smith, GM Gergely Antal, GM Simen Agdestein of Norway, FIDE Master Darwin Yang and IM Danny Rensch, and drew with On-sichuk. His only setback came at the hands of Meier.
