BIEL, Switzerland — GM Wesley So gave Italian GM Fabiano Caruana some uneasy moments before losing in the fifth round of the 2010 Biel Young Grandmasters chess championship here Friday.
So, who pulled off shocking victories in last year’s World Chess Cup in Russia, battled the equally-talented but higher-rated Caruana on even terms before resigning in 49 moves of the Semi-Slav.
Caruana’s victory dislodged So from the lead with 3.5 points on two wins and three draws. The Cavite native So slipped to second place with 3 points on two wins, two draws and one loss in the 10-player, category-17 tournament.
Tied with So in second to fifth places were GMs Evgeny Tomashevsky and Dmitry Andreikin of Russia and GM Maxime Rodshtein of Israel.
The second-seeded Tomashevsky halved the point with GM David Howell of England, Andreikin split the point with top seed GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and Rodshtein won over Anish Giri of the Netherlands.
Vachier-Lagrave and GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam share sixth to seventh places with 2.5 points.
