Seven year old among Grandmasters

Reykjavik Open Chess Competition that now takes place in Iceland is one of the most prestigious open chess tournaments in the world. Never have we had more contestants but they are about 230, 170 foreign chess players from 40 different countries.

World Champions in Iceland 

Two World Champions are among contestants, the Chinese Guo Qi, World Junior Chess Champion for girls and Alexander Ipatov, the World Junior Chess Champion. Three of the highest ranked (Elo points) chess players in the world, under 20 years old also participate along with Friðrik Ólafsson, the first Icelandic Grandmaster and an Icelandic legend. 

Youngest Contestant Ever

The youngest contestant this year, and also in the 49 years history of the Reykjavik Open, is 7 year old Óskar Víkingur Davíðsson. Grandmaster Friðrik Ólafsson is the oldest contestant this year, 78 years old, but he also competed on the first Reykjavik Open in 1964 and has won the tournament 3 times.
 
A total of 10 rounds will be played during the 9 days that the tournament takes place, 19th-27th of February. Admission to Harpa Conference Hall is free.
