Negi leads Indian challenge in Dubai Open

NEW DELHI, April 5, 2010

Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi leads a strong Indian presence in the prestigious 12th Dubai Open chess tournament that has attracted over 150 players from 32 countries.

Seeded three, Parimarjan will be in the company of three other Indian GMs – Abhijeet Gupta, S. Arun Prasad and R. R. Laxman.

The six International Masters in the 28-member Indian contingent are M. R. Lalith Babu, D. Harika, S. Satyapragyan, M. R. Venkatesh, Sahaj Grover and M. Shyam Sundar.

The leading Indian ladies in the fray are, Woman Grandmasters Eesha Karavade, Subbaraman Meenakshi and Woman International Master Padmini Rout.

The field is headed by Armenia’s Gabriel Sargissian, followed by Ukrainian Vladimir Baklan. The nine-round event, that offers $45,000 as prize-money, opened late on Monday evening and concludes on April 13.
