Selection for PH Chess Olympiad team begins

MANILA, Philippines – The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) will be holding the 2012 National Open Chess Championships (men and women) to select the members of the Philippine team for the 41st Chess Olympiad in August.

In line with the mission of the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission to discover new athletes and select the best players, elimination tournaments will be held nationwide to select the qualifiers for the semifinals.

These elimination tournaments are open to all untitled NCFP members.

The top thirty placers or 30% in each elimination tourney (whichever is lower) from the Men’s Division shall advance to the semifinal round to join the seeded International Masters, FIDE Masters and National Masters .

In the distaff side, the top 40% shall advance to the semifinal round together with seeded Women International Masters, Women FIDE Masters and Women National Masters.

The top six placers in the men’s division semifinals will join 10 grandmasters in the men’s finals.

The top 8 in the women’s division semis will compete against the six top women’s picks from the 2011 Battle of Grandmasters in the women’s finals.

The first elimination tourney will be held on April 16-20 at the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence headquarters in Quezon City.

Registration isP300. Non-NCFP members must apply for membership before joining the tournament by paying the annual dues.
