Greetings from Bilbao at the Grand Slam Final!
We have two major tournaments going on simultaneously. Six of the top eight male players in the world are competing in Bilbao. The only 2 missing from the top eight are Kramnik and Morozevich. After 4 rounds, Topalov is in clear first with Carlsen right behind him. In addition, Carlsen is now also the unofficial #1 player in the world after defeating Radjabov while Ivanchuk lost to Aronian and Anand lost to Topalov.

Many of the top female players are in Nalchik for the Women’s World (Knockout) Championship. There will be a new champion crowned as the defending champion was eliminated in round 2. The quarterfinals will start tomorrow.

It is Saturday Open Forum. The forum is yours!
Can I ask why you are not playing in the Women’s World Chess Championship.
You are promoting chess to girls: would not playing in the WWCC2008 be the best example you could set?
You would also have a reasonable chance of winning it if you are playing anything like your (frozen) FIDE ELO.
Do you people think that one player can just decide to play a World Championship or not???
All players that are there have qualified one way or another.
So here is your answer, Susan can’t play because she didn’t qualify (she didn’t make any attempt to qualify).
Sorry but I fail to understand your point. What does playing in this tournament have to do with promoting chess to girls? Why should Susan play in this knockout when she won the classical women’s world championship which is much more prestigious. Are you just another troll?
Anon 9:07 is just another Laugherty type troll. Ignore him.
“You are promoting chess to girls: would not playing in the WWCC2008 be the best example you could set?”
What a stupid statement!
Susan, why not require people to register to post to the blog? Some of the anons have nothing useful to say.
“Susan, why not require people to register to post to the blog?”
And what difference does this make? Do you, now that I’m signed in, know which one of the previous posts is mine?
Sounds like there are some surfers looking for an argument, but my (9.07) question are interested questions …
… from a chess mom – so thanks for all the assumed maleness – wrong!
You have a point about having to qualify, but Susan could have put herself in the lists. Surely active players are going to be more listened to my aspiring players.
Nice to Susan in Bilbao on the webcam. Her Spanish is better than mine.
Oops, meant to say nice to see Susan doing the commentary on webcam. Guess I should preview my comments.
susan, you put top 8 male players in the world, and not top 8 in the world in general. no woman is close to the strengths of these guys, why put male and not overall or just leave the gender out.
Test post to see if I can sign in on my own account.
Dear Susan: The rumours say Magnus will join Team Anand in October aginst Kramnik. Can you shed some light on this?
Haaa? These rumours can only total sucker believe to.
Who will win the grand Slam Final? I pick Topalov and Federer.
Susan,
I love your commentary! Your Spanish is muy delicioso!
Susan, I liked the previous format on your blog and do not think the new format is nearly as good. I wonder if others agree and have commented?
Where did you learn Spanish and your other languages?
‘Where did you learn Spanish and your other languages?”
I taught myself 6 other languages besides my native Hungarian from traveling around the world for chess.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
Susan, why not have two blogs – one for chess, one for everything else?
“Susan, why not have two blogs – one for chess, one for everything else?”
She has more than 10 blogs.
“You are promoting chess to girls: would not playing in the WWCC2008 be the best example you could set?”
“What a stupid statement!”
I agree. Stupid statement indeed.
“In addition, Carlsen is now also the unofficial #1 player in the world after defeating Radjabov”
I think WORLD CHAMPION ANAND might disagree about your statement who’s the #1 player in the world?? Please rephrase.
I don’t think anon 9:07 statement is stupid. It’s a valid question though I’m not sure the poster understands what’s involved to get to that tournament.
I suspect with all the other things Susan is doing right now, trying to get to the level necessary to qualify would be difficult.
Even as a mere class player I can appreciate how hard it is to improve if I’m doing other things besides working on my chess game. I think at the professional level it becomes even more difficult to compete without cutailing other activities like teaching, lectures, game commentary, event promotion, etc.
