Spain is in the limelight in this week. Hikaru just won an impressive event in Barcelona. Mikhalevski did the same in Calvia.
Ivanchuk is +2 against Leko after 8 games.
The category 12 SPICE Cup International Tournament will take place from November 8 to 16. It will be one of the strongest round robin International tournaments being held in the United States in many years.

Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
What about Ivanchuks play is so accurate or forceful that others GMs have so much trouble with it?
How not to televise chess? Just check out the latest ChessNow show broadcast on public access television from the Manhattan Neighborhood Network studios in New York City, New York, USA. LINK
The USA needs some better televised chess!
Kasparov once said (with regard to
Ivanchuk’s strenght):
“One day he plays so frighteningly strong ,way above 2800 ELO,that I have that creepy feeling he sees everything all along these games.Other days,he is unrecognizable, seemingly almost not interested for giving his best, playing only at his 50% capacity . Luckily for the rest of us!”
I would add my comment to that :Chuky has been showing his real strenght face lately, having more good days than bad days
Ivanchuk knows everything! He remembers All games!!! And he IS talented! That’s why other GMs are in trouble.
Who will be taking part in the :
SPICE Cup International Tournament
Yes, Ivanchuk is on a very hot streak.
I have seen this TV show. I have a hard time accessing it.
The full field will be announced shortly and it will be a category 12. I cannot even recall any International RR tournament in the US at this level for a long time. I know there have been a number of category 9 and 10 but not 12.
I cannot speak for Dr. Moscow. He can do as he wishes. You have to ask him directly. I personally do not want any dealing with people like SS or MR.
Best wishes,

Is there any coverage on file of the FIDE Women’s World Rapid/Blitz Chess Championships that you won?
http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/2007/06/1992-womens-world-rapid-championship.html
http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/2007/06/1992-womens-world-blitz-championship.html
Melody Amber is the name of the daughter of the sponsor of the FIDE Women World Blitz and Rapid Championship in 1992. The sponsor later had a stroke and never recovered fully.
How good are you at moving a Knight on a chessboard?
There is a fun free on-line yahoo! game called CrazyChess where you move a knight to capture pawns. This would be fun for kids or adults. LINK
Apparently, two years ago there was a major exhibition sponsored by the Asia
Society in American museums called “Asian Games: The Art of Contest.” I have been fortunate enough to get a copy of the exhibition book. I found a quote there that I would like you to comment on:
“We hope that this exhibition, in addition to persuading visitors of the historical importance of games, will also stimulate an interest in playing board games. As computer gamers sit in solitary oblivion frantically pressing buttons to manipulate images on screens, it is
worth considering how such games could have succeeded, to a large extent, in eclipsing real board games. The answer may be that they have appropriated much of the best of traditional board games. But it is also worth pointing out that the appeal of most electronic games is ephemeral. Ask a teenager if he still plays the same game he played two years ago, and the answer will
inevitably be no. We can predict with confidence that twenty years from now, of the electronic games currently in fashion, it is only those versions of classic board games-chess, weiqi/go and perhaps backgammon-that will still enjoy widespread popularity.
Does the future of chess, weiqi and backgammon, then, lie solely
in electronic media? We hope not. However convenient it may be to play chess or weiqi on the internet, nothing can replace the face-to-face social interaction of real games playing-and indeed the attraction of such games as
spectacle. It is no coincidence that there is a trend now among jaded electronic games players to return to board games. This renewed interest undoubtedly reflects the need to compete with a real (as opposed to real-time) person. But there may be another reason for this development. The physical satisfaction of holding a well-crafted gaming piece or die, or of hearing the sonorous click of the pieces as they are placed on the board, does not exist in an electronic universe. No culture better understood the aesthetics of games than the Japanese, whose go, sugoroku, and shogi boards were not only objects of exquisite beauty, but were also designed to enhance
the sound of piece struck against board. If, in addition to stimulating more research on Asian games, this exhibition prompts some of its visitors to take up chess, xiangqi, or weiqi-or even better, to work out the rules of liubo-then we will be entirely satisfied.”
Colin Mackenzie and Irving Finkel, “Preface”, Asian Games: The Art of
Contest (Asia Society), p. 17
This political banter and posturing is too depressing for a Saturday nite live. Let’s lighten it up a bit: How much would Ivanchuk check if Ivanchuk could check wood? Hint…see the photo. Go Fighting Illini!
Susan, now is the time to have intTell your buddy jan that I badly wanted to honor my committment, you refused the money for texas tech without their knowledge and furthermore my only string was not association to paul which was my choice. Hence I wasrejected, never cut and ran. your own family members begged you to not make this mkistake and you did it. Now I am being slandered, tread lightly jan I have no relation to the people mentioned.
With all due respect, this matter is closed to me. We moved on and found other sponsors. I believe I met Jan once. I think it was during a lecture I gave in Las Vegas. I have no contact with her whatsoever.
It is unfortunate that lies are being put out there and it is even more unfortunate that some people decide to buy this garbage.
Paul IS a part of SPICE and he IS one of the main organizers. He is also the director of Marketing and PR for SPICE. I am the main organizer of this tournament. We are a successful team and it will not change.
What is the purpose of this event if either one of us cannot be involved in this? Who will organize it? Who will take care of all the details? Who will do the thousands of little things to make sure everything will go smoothly?
We do not make a penny from this. We have to spend our own time and money to make this event happen. We have spent so far hundreds of hours on this event alone.
Once again, I have stated repeatedly that I understand your position and I agree with your decision. What people choose to believe is their business. This matter is closed.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
Hey, Eric!
How’s it going with your plans to become an IM?
To ‘Spider’ of 3.53pm: thanks for the Polgarblog references, but I was actually asking what coverage there was of the FIDE Women’s Rapid/Blitz events before, during and shortly afterwards.
Was it covered in the main Chess magazines worldwide, as I would expect a FIDE World-level event to be?
For the record once again, I have no relationship to the two people referenced by the poster, in fact one is sending me defamatory emails and threatening to sue me for giving money to susan that infact I never gave. On the other hand jan is defamikng me for welching on a promise that I never welched on. Thisnust might be why no one supports us chess. Again susan paul could of done all the work and not put my name in any press releases. whats the big deal, In fact you and he posted my name 72 times which did not bother me prior to this mess. Now I get hate mail by the minute from some enemy of yours. The only thing i now know is at least on ofyour enenimes makes little or no sense. If you need support reconsider and have a provost call me.
susan, I just read a exchange between sam, who to the best ofmy knowledge does not want to do anything but helpchess, methods poor (in my opinion)butpoints sometimes make complete sense and marcus roberts(opinions speak for themselves)who is now threatening to sue me for supporting a tournament. This was why I did not want the association. now that the damage is already done, and jan does have a point,I will reafirm my request to talk to reps of texas tech and maybe we can right the ship.At best this mess was handled poorly by getting a blog debate going. for that I apologize for my part.
Sam Sloan wants to help chess but the team of Polgar/Truong doesn’t? Sloan changes his stories hourly and Polgar/Truong stuck to their gun. So who do you believe? This comedy is getting better and better all the time. Sloan is a liar, an ego maniac, a guy who doesn’t give a damn about anyone but himself. He’s the guy who does nothing but spam all the freaking newsgroups with his filth all day long. Give me a freaking break.
Do you(Susan) think you will play competitive chess again in the future, or will you continue to pursue the betterment of chess? Specifically girls and youth chess?
Who wants to wager that Ivanchuck will be the next undisputed World Chess Champion?
I have the old American and Soviet intelligence people focusing all of the intercepted alien intelligence mechanisms on this.
Resistance is futile.bjbcwvo
No, I do not plan to play competitive chess again unless there is something unique out there.
One of my goals now is to clean up the US chess politics. In the hands of the same people for decades, chess in this country has gone nowhere. Too many people who ran for the board ended up compromising for one reason or another. I stood firm during the election and I will stand firm until the job is done.
I will also continue to promote chess, especially for scholastic, college and professional. I will also continue my effort with girls.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

no moreresponses i neverasked anyonetostep aside, moron one lies, moron two quotes him and moron three bashes me. I suggest like eric andersonyou find someother idiot who wants to give away money so some crazy peoplecan beat him orher up. alternatively, understand i wanted to write the check to texastech and not have pauls name and mine in any releases. no other issue ever was discussed. susan has agreed and you people persist. so whos the winner, anderson removes his money, i remove mine, uscf gets sued, scandel, do you not see a pattern here, its not the sponsors its the crazy sidekicks.
Ms. Newton, I’ve been harshly critical of Mr. Goichberg lately. But does he really deserve to be lumped in with the other two you name?
Dr. Moskow is frustrated. Like most of us, he’s an imperfect human being. But if he feels betrayed, the feeling is understandable….
All USCF fiduciaries need to start acting like fiduciaries.
Eric,
Technically all donations or grants awarded to the university belong to the instituion not the individuals. They may simply be in charge of how the money is spent (and you would set conditions if you wanted to). You could donate funds to help chess at TTU for example by setting up an endowment for chess scholarships. Those would of course go to the students – no one else. If you want a novelty then earmark it for graduate students. Who knows, Korchnoi might just head back to school…(joking of course since some blog readers take everything literally).
Anonymous gifts are also possible. Recently the University of Chicago received a $100 million dollar gift (this is not a typo) from an anonymous donor to assist undergraduates of low-income families in their education. That was truely amazing!!
The universities have strict rules about fundrasing btw. Faculty or staff cannot simply call someone and ask for money. However, if an offer comes – that is different. So if you are truely serious about donating funds then contact the Provost, President or even the Chancellor yourself.

I am not sure if Dr. Moskow or others concerned reliazed how far administrators and others at Tech stuck their collective neck out to a) establish a chess program as a genuine academic activity b) hire two chess professional c) establish a one-of-a-kind institute. They did this because they wanted to help scholastic chess first and foremost and saw it as a wonderful acativiy for children and youth. Now a few bad apples are ruining it for the rest. I am sure that the good outnumber the bad by at least 10,000 to 1 but the bad ones are simply a lot more vocal. If these evil people manage to ruin Tech’s efforts it will have reprecussions to all college chess. I would bet that universities like Tech would not want to touch chess for a least a generation. Its time for the good people of chess to stand up and fight these “chess terrorists”.
TTU Member
Eric,
I have suggestion for you. Why don’t you pay a visit to Tech – talk with people around here and then decide whether or not to donate a even a single dime.

Over in Tim Krabbe’s Chess Diary, http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess2/diary.htm, item 363 brings news of a new longest-decisive game.
Fressinet-Kosteniuk, a Rapid game, was won by Black in 237 moves.
Krabbe is right up there with Mig: great writers.
I appreciate the interest by many people in this matter. But as I said, the matter is closed in my book. I assess no blame on Dr. Mowskow. If he wishes to donate the money to be used for the tournament and the players, he is welcome to do so. I would never reject donations for no reason. He can donate to TTU or the SPF. It makes absolutely no difference for me. If he wants his name off the press releases, that can be honored as well.
We have many people who have worked very hard to make this a successful event. SPICE will not remove any member of the organizing committee.
Dr. Moskow has no obligation to donate or not donate. It is strictly his right and no one should attack him for doing either. He is not the party who created all the problems. He wanted to help but we simply disagree on the course of action.
I believe people are innocent until proven guilty. A guilt does not come from Sam Sloan or his supporters repeating the same one sided garbage hundreds of times a day.
Dr. Moskow has the right to protect his reputation. Please lay off the attack against him.
As I have said many times before, Mr. Sloan has zero credibility in my book, not now, not ever. He constantly lies on a daily basis. He is a big detriment to the USCF and chess in general. I have no interest in negotiating or speaking with Mr. Sloan or any of his supporters.
Thanks!

Keep up the good work Susan!
You are a very strong person!
Hi Everyone,
At the risk of making this sound like a joke, this is the real Jan Newton. First of all, when I post here I always do so under my name, Jan and sign Jan Newton. I don’t hide behind “anonymous” tags – I see no reason to do so. I stand behind what I write and I’m not afraid to own up to it, no matter what people may think about it.
Second, I have never met Ms. Polgar, or Mr. Truong. A dear friend of mine who lives in Las Vegas and who is one of the principals in Goddesschess attended a presentation last year given by Ms. Polgar and Mr. Truong at the Riveria during a major tournament held at the hotel. My friend introduced herself afterward and that may be where my name came up – in connection with Goddesschess. The presentation was on marketing and promoting chess.
I have also, during the past year, sent two emails to Ms. Polgar, both in connection with chess events: one was a charity event fundraiser for breast cancer and the other was with respect to Ray Robson.
I do not know who copied and posted my comments here that I made at the goddesschess blog – it wasn’t me. I haven’t posted to this topic until now – just so you all know. If someone else has been masquerading as me and posting comments here and elsewhere, well, that’s actually pretty funny, because I would suspect it’s a guy, hiding behind a pair of pantyhose, so to speak. In any event, I closed the particular discussion at Chess, Goddess and Everything from which those comments were copied to any further comments a day or two ago; that may be why comments about what I said there are showing up here.
I would like everyone to please be clear on this: my opinions and statements are my own and mine alone. I have no connection to Ms. Polgar and/or Mr. Truong. It is obvious to me that they both love chess, and so do I. That much we share in common. I do not speak for them and would not presume to do so! They can well speak for themselves, just as I speak for myself.
Jan Newton
Dear Jan,
I apologize for the mix up. I remember meeting a very nice woman in Las Vegas and she mentioned Chess Goddess blog. So I thought it was you. Sorry 🙂 Yes, it was at the chess marketing and promotion seminar that I gave.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar

ok, once again. my offer was rejected. Susan agrees to that about 100 times. I tried to get thelawsuit dropped, shame on me for hoping peace could be established and susan not financialy ruined in the process, for trying to create a solution guilty as charged. Again, who said I have a relation to marcus roberts, not the case. Sam was reasonable and while not having a relationship who am I to judge him. Susan who I admire and I do not share beliefs on what is the best way to handle the situation. I have since made plans to go to argentina and have already expended the earmarked funds for that event. In the case that texas tech ever wants to directly sponsor another event my pledge stands.A dean opr provost can call , and I will be happy to back the pledge with an loc, or prepay when dates are arranged. Like susan knew in advance my donations are limited to events I play in, that is news to no one. eric moskow (himself I think). As for the new york times, they and dylan in particular are solid and beyond reproach.
Your readers should stop bashing Dr Moscow. Their comments are driving future sponsors away. They are not helping chess by continuing to attack one of its sponsors.
I applaud Ms. Polgar’s stance. Even after she lost a major sponsor, she continued to defend the sponsor and said nothing but pleasant things. That shows class and that’s my 2 cents.
I have removed any post that questions Dr. Moskow’s decision. As I said before, he has the right to do as he wishes. I have nothing but respect for him and I ask everyone to please show him the proper respect.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
