1. Rxh6+ Kxh6

After 2. Qh2+??? Qh5 wins for Black. This zwischenzug eliminates that defense.

I haven’t been able to solve it but at least I see some promising lines and ideas. The immediate 1. Rxh6+ Kxh6, 2. Qh2+ fails to mate because Black can interpose his Queen: 2… Qh5 and the King supports the Queen. But,
1. Qd6 …. and now Black has to be careful about the Rxh6 threat. If 1… Qf6, 2. Rxh6 Kx h6, 3. Qh2 and now the Black Queen is on the wrong diagonal to safely interpose.
… h5
2. Qe5 … Attacking the pawn again and also aiming at the mating square g7
… Be2 If 2… Kh6, 3. Qg5+ drives back the King and White will crash through on the h-file with his Rook
3. Qxe2 Kh6 And now what? Qe3+? Qd2+? Or maybe simply Qe5 renewing the triple threats of Rxh5 and potentially Qg7 and also Qg5+ again driving the King away from its own defense of the h-pawn. But does it give time for Black to defend along the g-file?
4. Qe5 Rg8
5. Rf1 Qe8 It looks to me like Black still can’t allow White to capture the h-pawn even though White momentarily gives up his grip on the g-file, letting Balck’s King have a couple squares to run to. And if 5… Qg6, 6 Rf6 pins the Queen.
6.Rf6+ …. I don’t think I’m forseeing all the variations here but this looks strong to me. White tries to drive away the King from its own defense of the h-pawn and if Black obliges, Rxh5 should be deadly. Meanwhile if Black’s King goes to g7, the discovered check looks dangerous. And if Black’s Rook intervenes, it cuts off communication and protection of the pawn
6. … Rg6
7. Rxh5+ Kg7
8. Re6+ … Wins the Queen at least, doesn’t it? But I may have missed something.

Damn. Very dirty tactic.
1. Rxh6+! Kxh6 2. Qd6+!! followed by 3.Qh2+ and mate next

Well, I spotted the first move almost instantly, but finding the second move took a few minutes since I was too enamored of Qh2 and Rh1. However, I eventually stumbled over Qd6:
1. Rh6! Kh6
2. Qd6!
And now black can’t block the check with the queen from f6 since white will then play Qh2, and the black queen can longer safely block that check (she is not protected by her king). Also, black can’t move the king without either taking away the h5 square from his queen, or by removing his protection of the queen when she interposes at h5. Mate in 4 total moves is unavoidable.
Ugh, I had it wrong. I’m sure some others figured it out quickly. But at last I had part of the idea, which does involve changing the squares on which the Black Queen can interpose on checks after White’s Rook takes the h-pawn.
1. Rxh6 Kxh6
2. Qd6+ …. Zwischenzug. I was wrong to start out with Qd6 but, unless I missed again (!), this idea plays an important part. If 2. Qh2+ immediately then Black interposes the Queen with …Qh5 where she has the support of her King. Now, Black will not have a good interposition after the coming Qh2+
(A)
2. … Kh7
3. Qh2+ Qh5 No longer supported by the King
(B)
2. … Kh5
3. Qh2+ … No interposition at all.
(C)
2. … Qf6
3. Qh2+ Qh4 Again, an interposition to an unsupported square.

I missed the move 2.Qd6+! For the simple reason that I found 2.Qh2+! Mates in 7 maximum as given by me! I did not proceed further!
Hence I propose that 2.Qh2+ is not wrong (as claimed by some) but do agree that 2.Qd6+ is neater and faster!
Harry
Harry, your line has an error at move 3. The black king can’t reach h8 since he is sitting on h6 when you check from d2.
Apologies, Ladies & gentlemen!
Kindly ignore my last post claiming 2.Qh2+ is not in error.
Strange, must have been, for the BK to appear in h8 (from h6) instead of h7 on 3.Qd2+!. I must have been half asleep when I posted the first solution and fully asleep when I posted the second justification. I am now wide awake!
