Susan, could you please have your IT guy find out why your page loads so slowly with Firefox? My connection is 11 MB and it still takes a couple of minutes.
Anyway, endgame studies are easy.
1. Re2!! R:e2 2. Be4!! R:e4 3. f3+ and wins
Of course any deviation by black and the pawn promotes on e8 with a decisive advantage.
I had a difficult Sunday.Being Sunday and no work started with the problem early.Spent a lot of time but to no avail. Then I tried writing down some statements. (1) It is difficult to support white P. Ra8 and N will take it. Re2 and R will take it.B cannot support it. (2) f3+ is attractive especially if R could be lured to e4. (3)Be4 to tempt black R will be ignored as R will find more more meat in P than B. (4)In view of (3) B will be attractive for black R if the R is below e4. (5)1.Re2 will support the P and can lure black R to e2. I wove these threads to get some cloth. 1.Re2 Rxe2 2.Be4 Nd5 (Obviously 2… Rxe4 3.f3+) 3.e8=Q I am too tired and leave the rest to Rinck.
I got this one pretty quick, but mostly because I have seen this theme before (maybe even this exact puzzle, though I couldn’t find in my notes). I almost instantly thought of Re2 to divert the black rook under e4 followed by the deadly blocking maneuver of Be4. I don’t see defense, though I had to think a few seconds about the case where black refuses the bishop:
White can preserve the pawn with 1. Re2, since 1. …Rxe2; 2. Be4 Rxe4 3. f3+ wins the rook.
Black can try 2. … Kf4 3. e8=Q Rxe4, but now, with 4. Qb8+, White should do no worse than a win in a K&Q vs. K&R endgame.

1.Re2!!!.Rxe2.2.Be4!!!.Rxe4.3.f3+!!!.Kf4/f5.4.fxe4.Kxe4. 5.e8=Q+ and white wins easily with Q vs N+P!
If1…..Rxe7.2.Rxe7 and white wins easily being R up!
If1….any Nc8/d5.2.Rxe6.Nxe7.3.Nxe7 and white wins easily being a R+B up!
if 1….other moves.2.e8=Q wins easily for white!
If 2…other moves.3.e8=Q wins easily for white!

One of those things at least I would never find – that’s why I’m not any F/I/G-Master!
Te2 – Txe2 – Le4, and then you see it!

I almost instantly thought of Re2 to divert the black rook under e4 followed by the deadly blocking maneuver of Be4. I don’t see defense, though I had to think a few seconds about the case where black refuses the bishop:
1. Re2! Re2 (what else possible?)
2. Be4! Kf4 (Re4 3.f3 forks to win)
3. e8Q Re4
And black has managed to retain a knight and rook vs the queen, but this is only temporary…..
4. Qb8! and the knight is toast. With the pawn, white’s win is pretty easy- much easier than Q vs R.
