Cuban Dominguez Satisfied with His Performance in Corus Chess

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 4 (acn) Cuban GM Leinier Dominguez described his performance at the recently held Corus Chess tournament, the year’s first Grand Slam, as good and said he was with the mind set on his next undertaking.

Despite achieving half a point less than a year ago, I was more solid and I played at my best, he said, referring to the event played in the town of Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, where he finished ninth with 6.5 points out of 13 possible.

Dominguez, ranking number 25 worldwide and first in Latin thanks to his 2,712 ELO points, and added another 1.1 to this ratio, which keeps him among the privileged 2,700 and over club, which includes only 34 chess players.

One win, a loss, and 11 draws marked the overall performance of the Cuban star, who acknowledged having made a very good preparation, which included new opening variations that he plans to use in the rest of the season.

When asked about his loss to Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who won the tournament with 8.5 points, he acknowledged that he made some serious mistakes under time pressure and that cost him greatly.

It was not a problem with the opening. I used the Grunfeld (defense) again, because I know it quite well, and you have to face the best player with the best weapons, Dominguez said without hesitation.

Regarding his next commitments, he confirmed that he will take his training for the upcoming Melody Amber, to be held from March 12th through the 15th in Nice, France very seriously, where the competition system will be a mix of semi-fast and blind games.
