NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Sandipan Chanda packed off Iran’s Elshan Moradiabadi in the third round to emerge as the first sole leader of the Asian chess championship at Subic, Olongapo City, in the Philippines on Friday.

Sandipan’s 35-move victory raised his tally to three points. Other Indian overnight leaders — K. Sasikiran, Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Abhijeet Gupta — were involved in draws on the top three boards to be at 2.5 points each.

Three other Indian GMs — Parimarjan Negi, Abhijit Kunte and Deepan Chakkravarthy won after drawn encounters in the first two rounds.

IM Aswin Jayaram pulled off a creditable draw against 11th-seeded Qatari GM Mohammad Al-Modiahki. Vidit Gujarathi surrendered to the Women’s World championship runner-up China’s Hou Yifan.

In the women’s section, Swati Ghate was among the three leaders after stunning fourth-seeded defending champion Tania Sachdev.
