Muscat: The 25th edition of Markaz Al Bhaja Open chess tournament, which recently took place on the weekend after a break in August due to Eid Al Fitr, got back to almost its full strength.

Salem Al Mashikhi once again showed that being ruthlessly focused pays in the war game called chess as he just edged out Rene Gabucay and Amrath Acharya, both of whom were at their vintage best, to claim his title pushing them to second and third place respectively.

The under-14 category was a round-robin with seven participants fighting for the top honours. But it was Rahul Rajan who took his appointed place at the top, ahead of Shamsudeen brothers Sawad and Mahmood respectively, but not before losing to fast improving Mahmood Shamsudeen in the seventh round.

The under-12 group had sensational outcome as Tejas S took title with an all-win record but the second place had to be decided on SB as both Ronak Bhatnagar and Abhinav Siddharth finished with three points each.

Thanks to his higher SB, Ronak took the honours ahead of Abhinav. Other commendable performances came from Abdul Quder and Soham Parekh. There was no stopping Kavin Keerthivel S., in the under-10 as he once again reigned supreme conquering all comers to retain his crown.
