Fide Master (FM) Haruna Nsubuga has questioned Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) arbiters over their decisions during the just concluded Rwabusheyi Memorial Chess Championship.

Nsubuga ended the eight round contest with seven points after beating champion Harold Wanyama in the final round. This would automatically
grant him the title if the chief arbiter, Robert Katende, was to stick to the earlier rules of the tournament.

“They told us that we were playing under the direct encounter, head-on rules but when the last game was over, the rules were changed. That is not fair,” Nsubuga complained.

He added, “It’s not the first time this is happening and why make rules and then fail to abide by them?”

But according to UCF’s president Vianney Luggya, Nsubuga a first year student at KIU, was entitled to the top award if the rule of direct encounter was applied like Katende had earlier communicated.

“Yes, following the head-on rules he wins the tournament but I believe it was a mistake made by the arbiter to name a rule that does not apply to the tournament,” he said.

“A head on or direct encounter rules only operate in round robin events but with such events we use the Swiss rules because there are a few games.”

The four-day event that ended on Sunday at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel, saw Harold Wanyama win the Open category with 7 points at par with Elijah Emojong and Nsubuga in second and third places respectively.

To win the sh1.2m top prize, Wanyama beat Deo Makumbi, Sadati Muluya, Emojong, Patrick Mukasa, Solomon Lubega, Julius Ssali and Farouk Fauza.
