Was it a lost position for Grischuk?
57. Kf6… (Shirov)
I don’t get this move
Anonymous, do you like 57. Kg7 better?
Why white didn’t take the rook for a draw? What did white hope for?
Taking the rook loses. Black traps the king at h8. White eventually runs out of moves and has to push the queen’s side pawns, letting black’s c pawn through.
Beautiful.
Ah, I see. Nice.
Yup. If white takes the rook, then black traps the king in the corner, but it’s not stalemate. White’s b2 pawn is free to move, and move it would. Black captures and promotes. Game over.
So there was no way for a draw ?? that is interesting….
Can Pono win this one Susan?
D.K.
Guess not. Draw is oficial.

What is Gelfand still hanging around for (after 59.)? Is there anything left?

+++++++
I noticed trap for the King on move 45. But why not Kxf5 instead of Kf6.
57. Kxf5 Rxh7
58. Kg6
and I don’t see clear win for the Black. Maybe somebody explains this because I’m (obviously) not an expert.
If 57. Kxf5, then black can muscle the white king out with Kf2, which frees the rook. The rook can then munch pawns at will.
[I mean Kf7]
Anon, I just asked Fritz8 what he thought. He likes 57. … Rxh7 after Kxf6. Then, 58. Kg6 Kg8, and Fritz evaluates the position at about -5.2.
Dan thanks. I see clearly how Kf7 wins (what you sugessted earlier) but maybe you entered wrong position because Black can not play 58 (or 59) Kg8. King is on e8
57. Kxf5 Rxh7
58. Kg6 Rh8
59. Kg7 Rf8
60. h7 (and black is lost?) Rh8
61. f5 and white forces sacrifice while having nice pawn structure
Or:
57. Kxf5 Rxh7
58. Kg6 Rf7 looks like a draw, so it looks like black needs to move Kf7 before Rxh7 to keep the king out.
Quite right, anon. Thanks for pointing out that setup error.
