Open Reykjavík Chess Tournament Concludes

The 2011 Reykjavík Open chess tournament concluded with an award ceremony and celebration at Reykjavík City Hall yesterday. There were 166 participants in the tournament from 30 different countries.

Six chess players shared first place with seven wins: three Ukrainians, Yuriy Kuzubov, Vladimir Baklan and Ilya Nyzhnik, who is the world’s youngest grand master, Kamil Miton from Poland, Ivan Sokolov from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Jon Ludvig Hammer from Norway, Morgunbladid reports.

Hammer also boasts the Nordic Championship title among the men, while Christin Anderson from Sweden became the Nordic Champion among the women.

The most successful Icelandic chess player was Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson, who ended up in place 7-17th.
