Retired banker is backing his beliefs with cash

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Retired investment banker Rex Sinquefield plans to invest millions in upcoming years to try and shape Missouri’s future.Sinquefield is expected to be a prominent presence in this week’s campaign-finance reports, the first for statewide candidates since Missouri’s campaign-donation limits were removed.

He also helped to establish the Show-Me Institute, a free-market think tank based in Clayton. The organization has an eight-member board that includes prominent bankers, economists and Republicans. It pays for research studies into several issues important to Sinquefield.

The St. Louis native moved back two years ago after 35 years away, but he’s heavily invested in issues of importance to him.

….Sinquefield has donated money to other personal interests, including the symphony, St. Vincent’s and after-school programs for the urban poor. A chess enthusiast, Sinquefield is offering to start a regional chess program for children.
