Bring back Sofia rules with no agreed upon draws. It will make players take more risks to create wins.
If Chess wants paying sponsors, this is a BIG step towards that end. Most sports do not end in a draw, they go into overtime or sudden death. And they certainly do not play a little and then shake hands agreeing to end the game early.
Imagine a baseball game tied in the 2nd inning and the teams agree to a draw and walk off the field.
Bye bye sponsors and fans!
Both those would have been draws anyway with Sofia rules – they had a repetition going.
To remedy the ability of gm’s to force a 3 fold rep, if the game ends in draw there should be blitz until there’s a winner, for each game. This way no game can end in a draw just like any other sporting event there has to be a clear winner for each and every game.

Frank, I agree that players ought to play to win. I am against prearranged draws and short draws in positions that don’t justify them. However, just because a game is a draw doesn’t mean a player lacked a will to win. Most draws are because a player wanted to win! He had a winning position, his pieces on the best squares, and if he does anything but move to the next best square; he looses. Of course, there are exciting draws. Someone is swindled out of a win by an enterprising sacrifice that leads to perpetual check…a Frank Marshall speciality. So I would say it not a draw to chases the fans away, but the behavior of the players. Short prearranged draws won’t bring the paying public back.
Anyway draws are common in other sports too. Just look at soccer – the most popular sport on the planet.
4 of 5 games today already ended in a draw, this is exactly what I’m talking about. I do however see your point qm1 todd. I wish I was a little better at saving a loss like that!
Make that all 5 ended in draws.
a disappointing day but i think we’re going to see a lot of draws the rest of the tournament – i think all of leko’s games will be draws- it’s a shame since he could’ve fought for a win but i guess he doesn’t care about winning
Hello Susan ,
I’m from Brazil. Please, can U help me? This question is about Leko vs Grischuck :
54…Nxh2 and Grischuk wins?
54-…Nxh2
(55.Rxh2 , Rxg3)
Thanks!
I don’t understand this aversion to draws in chess (and assumption that the players weren’t trying to win) just because a game is a draw. Soccer (or American football) fans who truly understand the game don’t complain that a game wasn’t exciting just because it was a tie. I’ve seen lots of exciting soccer games (and a few boring ones) that ended in a tie, and I’ve seen (as well as played!) exciting draws in chess. Draws are a likely outcome between evenly matched competitors in any sport or game that allows that outcome. Whether one occurs says nothing in itself about how interesting the game was.

It seems to me BAP scoring is the simplest solution to GM draws: http://tinyurl.com/ylzgxo
Thank you Susan for this nice feature you added to play through the games!! If you have time could you give the opening and variation of the games played? Thank you for such an excellent site!
The draw between Carlsen and Morozevich was a mistake. Carlsen thought the position was repeated three times, the arbiter Geurt Gijssen agreed, and Morozevich got so upset that he left the premises. Later they realised there was a mistake, but Morozevidh could not be found, so the draw stands. Gijssen officially admitted mistake, but failed to apologize to Morozevich.
The draws originate from England’s Test Cricket they play Cricket for six days and end up with a boring draw …(lucky to get 15 thousand spectators attending}
Then they started one day cricket you get 300 chances to hit the ball each side…and you get a winner…and the odd cliff-hanger when the score is even you get a draw which nobody seems to mind…around 80 to 100 thousand spectators attend these games and creates millions of dollars …rewards for all
If chess changed it’s playing format to.. no win no pay… no win no 1/2 point format …we would seldom see a draw..with rewards for all
Simplest solution to banning draws is to stop inviting Leko to tournaments and invite Topalov to every tournament.
its impossible to force someone to play for win. they can just repeat the moves over and over… then what? of course its a draw…
