UAE’s Salem Youngest Arab Grand Master

SHARJAH – Salem A.R. Saleh rewrote history by becoming the youngest grand master in Arabia.

The 15-year-old Salem completed his third grand master norm and has gained sufficient elo points to gain the prestigious Arab Chess Championship title. Dr Suliaman Al Fahim, president of UAE Chess Federation, awarded Dh100,000 to Salem for winning the title and said, “We are hoping to achieve greater heights and today it is a grand success for the UAE.”

Salem said, “I am extremely happy. Now I can move on to my next goal which is to improve my elo points to 2700 per cent. Salem clinched the men’s title with seven points after the 9th and final round of the championship.

GM Al Modiahki Mohammed of Qatar was the runner-up with 6.5 points while GM Amin Bassem of Egypt took the bronze medal.
Salem defeated IM Khader Sami of Jordan in 34 moves. Salem made an attack in the kingside and exposed the black monarch and in the process to win a pawn.

Meanwhile, Bassem beat Bakr Jwan of Syria in 49 moves from a Sicilian defence. Amin coordinated his pieces well and went for an all-out attack in the centre.

Among women, WGM Mona Khaled of Egypt won the championship title with eight points. WFM Latreche Sabrina of Algeria took the silver with seven points while WIM Mouradian Knarik of Libya claimed the bronze medal.

Mona played a quick draw against WIM Mezioud Amina of Algeria. Sabrina defeated WIM Algildah Nibal of Syria in a prolonged match lasting 77 moves from a Caro-Kann defence.
