Cuban Chess Player Among Leaders at Spanish Tournament

Yuniesky Quesada will look for a foothold in his match today against the local Miguel Munoz, one of the top chess players in the Spanish Casino Barcelona tournament which ends today. 


Quesada, with an average of 2,604 points, faces the challenge from the local player in hopes of adding a unit that will allow him, to equal the championship leader, Russian Sanan Sjugirov, with at least 6.5, to finish in the top three of the match. On Tuesday, Quesada achieved his third win, defeating Spanish Joan Fluvia in 26 movements of a Spanish opening, open version, while Sjugirov tied with the Danish Peter Heine Nielsen, who has five and completes the podium.

In the rest of the program highlighted the wins of Dutch Ivan Sokolov over local Alvar Alons, as well as Munoz over Bosnian Predrag Nikolic.

The game held between the Georgian Levan Aroshidze and the Spanish Josep Oms also ended with parity.

In the list of positions the top three are followed by Aroshidze and Sokolov with 4.5 points, Alonso (3.5), Fluvia and Oms (3), Munoz 2.5 and Nikolic (2).

Today´s program is completed by Alonso-Fluvia, Sjugirov-Sokolov, Aroshidze-Nielsen and Nikolic-Oms.
