h6 …
Qc7 gives a skewer.
h6 if Qc7 then Qh7
I chose this line
1. Qh7+ Kf7
2. Bg6+ Kf6
3. Rf1+ Kg5
4. Rxe5+ Rxe5
5. Qxg7 Kh4
6. Rf7 Bc6
7. Bf5 d5+
8. Rc7 Qd8
9. Rxc6 dxc4
10. Qf6#
I did it myself up to 5. Qxg7, but I admit I turned it over to the computer after that.
after 1.qh7+ kf8! is a real kill-joy …2.h6 (the best) ke7, 3.bxb7 (nearly forced) rxe2+ 4.rxe2+ nxd2 5.bd5 kd8 6.hxg7 with a slight advantage for white, because black is forced to give the rook for the strong passer pawn.
best line is:
1.h6! qc7
2.qh7+ kf8
3.hxg7+ qxg7
4.rf2+ nf5
5.rxf5+ rxf5
6.qxf5+ qf7
7.qxf7+ kxf7
8.rf1+ kg7
9.bxb7 – and white is a piece up
there are tons of sidelines – and without a comp it is – to a player of my strength – impossible to make it through
(my first line was the naive
1.h6! qc7
2.qh7+ kf8
3.qh8+? ke7 and white loses)
sincerly, Vohaul
PS: i hate exhaustive answers like
“h6…” or “qc7…” and “h6 if qc7 then qh7” is no better…
I still think qh7+ is playable.
after Kf8
1. h6 Ke7
2. Bxb7 Kd7
3. Rxe5 dxe5
4. Qxg7+ Kd6
5. Rd1+ Ke6
6. Bd5+ Kd6
7. Be4+ Ke6
8. Bf5#
ehhhh….
1.qh7+ kf8
2.h6 ke7
3.bxb7 … black won’t play the silly 3…kd7?? but 3…rxe2+ instead – and there won’t be any mate – only a slight – non decicive advantage for white in the end
🙂
I still don’t see how White proceeds after 1. h6 R8e7. If you checked it with a computer, I’m sure there is a winning line — I just can’t see it yet.
i’ll try to give the analysis results in pgn format (simply copy the lines, paste them to windows editor, and save the file as yourchoice.pgn) hope it will work
yours Vohaul
