Obviously White has a million ways to win including 1. Rxe7, which is devastating for Black. I was at first lured by the mating them of 1. Nh6 followed by Rg8. Or trying to reverse the move order and sacrificing the Rook first with 1.Rg8. In all, I felt that was crude and clumsy (although even 1.Nh6 wins easily 1…Kxg7, 2Nxf5+ gxf5, 3. Kxg2). The Rook is hemming in the Black King, even if it is hanging (a small detail) but that led me at least to try 1. Bxe7+. After KxR, at least we know a discovered check is possible…
1. Bxe7+ Kxg7 No other flight squares and if 1…Rxe7, 2. Qxe7 mate
2. Bf6++ …. So we put that Knight to good use after all, covering the h6 flight square and also protecting the Bishop. 3. Qg7 mate follows
In practice I wouldn’t have found this and not worried too much about it because the obvious 1. Rxe7 also wins very easily.
