Kids show off skills at annual chess tournament

Students kept things in check Saturday at the Port Huron Area School District’s 15th annual chess tournament.

More than 100 students squared off in five rounds to determine winners in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Some children had just learned to play or only had been playing for a couple of years, while others — such as 17-year-old Travis Hill — had been playing for several years.

Travis said he learned to play in kindergarten from his father. His work paid off, as Travis took first place in his grade level for the fifth year in a row.

“I like the thinking process of it,” Travis said.

“There are so many million moves you can do in one turn.”
