Chess Winners Make Sharp Moves

SPECIAL TO THE LEDGER

Before each round of a student chess tournament in Lakeland on Saturday, players shook their opponents’ hands, a sign of sportsmanship encouraged by Polk Scholastic Chess Inc.

The organization runs the annual Polk Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament, which was at Highland Park Church of the Nazarene’s Family Ministries Building.

About 397 elementary, middle and high school students competed in the event.

The students were separated by grade level in five divisions: guppy, primary, elementary, middle and senior, according to Arvind N. Shah, president of Polk Scholastic Chess Inc.

Shah is a licensed agent with New York Life Insurance Company, one of the sponsors of the event.

During the regular season – October to January – 581 students participated in four tournaments. Four rounds were played at each event for a total of 16 rounds.

In order to participate in the championship tournament, each student must have played in 12 of those rounds.

On Saturday, students were separated into 24 sections based on their scores throughout the regular season.

“We believe the game of chess is an exciting way to teach critical thinking skills, sequencing, sportsmanship, self-control and many other skills important for academic growth and development,” Shah said.
