Former chess world champions Anatoly Karpov and Gary Kasparov will visit Peru next June to play some exhibition games against the Peruvian national champions, informs the Peruvian Institute of Sports (IPD).
“Karpov and Kasparov will come in exceptional good times for Peruvian chess,” said IPD President Arturo Woodman.
Their condition as former world champions will be a really good experience for our local chess players, added Woodman.
While in Peru, Karpov will promote his candidacy to the Presidency of the International Federation of Chess, also supported by Kasparov, according to IPD.
Karpov and Kasparov were rivals in 1980’s, and not only were by far the best chess players in the world, but they also represented different ways to see the world beyond the chessboards.
Karpov was considered the symbol of the Soviet ideal, the Communism, and was a member of the Soviet parliament; Kasparov was the son of the change, which would afterwards transform the Soviet society with Gorbachov and Yeltsin.

Excellent news!!
As a Peruvian I feel extremely proud. This visit will be a complete honor to the country and Peruvian chess. I am lucky to know both of them in person when they visited Brazil in 2003 – I live in Brazil, BTW.
Welcome to Peru, gentlemen!
Everybody wonders what difference would there be if Karpov becomes President of FIDE? Well this is exactly the kind of thing that Karpov (and his supporters) can do! The newspapers are very happy to report on Karpov and Kasparov and this will advertise chess. This is all good for chess and we should support Karpov and not let the opportunity slip by.
