On the left is NM Bill Arluck – On the right is IM Bernie Zuckerman, one of the American great chess players back in the Fischer era. He participated in a number of US Closed Championships. He is still above 2500 today! Standing in the background is one of our club’s managers, Mr. G, a correspondence chess master.
The next PCC Wednesday Night Super Blitz event is November 2, 2005.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
I remember Bernie back in those days. He was one of the best blitz players in the US.
Zuckerman was GM strength back then. He was the best US player in Blitz outside of Fischer.

It’s worth looking at the 2 Fischer-Zuckerman US-Ch. games. Unfortunately, Zuckerman had to defend with black both times. The game from ’65 is interesting because Zuckerman moves his king from g8 to a7. Perhaps this was unnecessary? With the extra tempi, Bobby is able to reposition his bishop and infiltrate Black’s position with his Queen. Then, Bobby does his own King march up the board.
The game the following year was not as close: Bobby takes advantage of a back-rank threat around moves 16 and 17. The way Bobby played with the initiative was exemplary; Zuckerman couldn’t castle without losing material. It reminds me of the trouble Judit has had during this tourney because of her shaky king position.
Susan, perhaps if you have the time you can check one of these games out and comment upon them. I’d be interested in any other comments, too.
Sincerely,
Devin
I’ll take a look at the games when I have a chance. I played Bernie twice at my chess center. He is still very strong. He finished 2nd and went 7.5 out of 10.
Best wishes,
