Galliamova and T. Kosintseva took a quick draw to guarantee a tie for first while Paikidze self destruct and lost in 24 moves with White. This gave Pogonina a path to catch up with the leaders. She took full advantage of it and defeated Shadrina with Black.
Congratulations to Pogonina, Galliamova, and T. Kosintseva!
Update: Galliamova defeated Pogonina in a rapid playoff to win first. Pogonina finished second while T. Kosintseva finished third.

Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Pogonina is the most beautiful Russian female player by far. She’s better looking and she’s also a better player than Kosteniuk.
Hey, let me ask you something. Did Kosteniuk ditch you or refuse to take your calls?
You seem to have a problem with this chess player…get it? She’s a chess player!!
how come all comments always mention kosteniuk? In bad light – all said and done she is world champion
My guess is because she’s one of the least liked person in the professional chess community. I don’t know her but I believe it’s the way how her management team fabricated her chess achievements while belittling other players. That’s just my take. I don’t care about her one way or another. There are many female players who are far superior than her and I personally like Hou Yifan a lot better.
Kosintseva was third because of the tie-break system in place while Galliamova beat Pogonina in a playoff to get the title.
Somewhat off topic…a chess player’s peak might be equal to that of an NFL running back. If Kosteniuk turns bigger bucks or rubles by posing for harmless cheesecake pix or being the chess player everyone loves to hate, then more power to her.
How many chess talents have left the game because it didn’t reward the effort needed to stay near the top?
I don’t think it’s because of her cheesecake pix, maybe. I think the problem most people have is her blatant distortion of her chess record. She claimed she was the youngest GM in history at 14. That’s a lie. Even if you forgive her distortion with the WGM title instead of GM, that’s a lie as well. Judit Polgar became a WGM at 12 and Lahno beat that record later. She claimed that she’s the best female player ever. I don’t think she’s in the top 5 and she’s now out of the top 10. And those cheesecake pix where she’s nearly topless were done when she was a minor. That’s pretty disguting in my book. So should we put her family or manager in jail for pushing her to do such deplorable stuff? Or was it her idea?
Congratulations to the winners!
I am not sure what to play if I only want a draw: I think as white I will play the Vienna, closed Sicialian (I have found some understanding for it recently, though still not gotten to the book on the Grand Prix) and otherwise classical, and as black the french and dutch which pretty much tempt white to go for something (Well, there is no exchange dutch; I still think the king’s fiancetto is appropriate in the exchange french)
But I never play for a draw, I can play for a win in a more restrained fashion.
Oh, in the game it is often important to keep things in perspective.
In my opening repertuoire it is very easy (french, dutch, vienna, king’s gambit, closed sicilian, otherwise classical) you strive patiently for win or you lose. Perhaps my play would gain even of less patience.
Yet doing this it is important to remember why one plays.
Women chess players are so much more beautiful than women tennis players!
am interested in reading all the links on kosteniuk being a fraud apart from this blog – how many do you have?
Anon 4:37:00 PM obviously didn’t check out any facts before trying to defend the lies and misleading facts about Kosteniuk.
How I Became Grandmaster at Age 14 (Hardcover from Amazon.com)
Just like how Shahade painted Kosteniuk, she’s a real chess bitch. This book contains full of errors. She did not become a Grandmaster at 14. She became a woman grandmaster which is something equivalent to FM for a male player. She also made claims such as she’s is a three time world champions. That’s a lie because she never won a single world championship. She only won 3 girls under 14 Mickey Mouse Disney Championships. This book is full of garbage like this.
How I Became Grandmaster at Age 14 (Hardcover from Amazon.com)
Ms. Kosteniuk is a very interesting and complex person. When I read this book, I wasn’t sure if she’s promoting herself or chess. There’re also misleading facts. She didn’t become a GM at 14. She became a WGM at 14 which is a big difference. This is the sort of things that make people angry.
Aside from her chess games and accomplishments (which now include a full GM title and the 2008 Women’s World Championship Title), Kosteniuk has posted about a hundred podcasts and chess tips videos for free. She has also commented and posted a number of her games for free. In addition she now promotes women’s chess in an official position for the FIDE.
What positive actions have you done to promote chess Anonymous? As best as I can tell you are a mediocre player, who judges women players based on looks instead of skill, and whose only contribution to chess is hate filled rants about Kosteniuk on any public forum you can find.
Why Mrs. Polgar continues to allow you to post is beyond me, but maybe it is difficult to ban based on IP with Blogspot.
I am neither a Kosteniuk supporter or hater, but at least she contributes a great deal to the chess community and has the grace to post positively even in tournaments she doesn’t win. Here is Kosteiuk’s own post congratulating Alisa Galliamova, something Anonymous never did as he preferred to post about Pogonina’s looks:

Can you please stop with the Kosteniuk bashing? Whether you like her or not, you should give her the respect she deserves.
Kramnik, Topalov, Anand, Carlsen, Nakamura, etc. basically get the same bashing all the time.
I work more than 16 hours a day on most days but I still try to bring you all the latest chess news. I do not have the time or energy to screen hundreds / thousands of comments daily to filter this nonsense out.
It is also very time consuming to remove one comment at a time. Please keep the hostility down and please try to keep the civility here on this blog.
Thank you!
Susan Polgar
Why did you leave out the last round pairings? I don’t even know who Paikidze lost to. You have the final crosstable but no interim crosstable so we can see which pairings are still to come.
Paikidze lost to Vera Nebolsina in her last round with white.
It’s not a personal attack when one points out the fabrication of Kosteniuk’s claim. It’s clearly proven that she’s never a GM at age 14. This is factually clear but Kosteniuk still refuses to publicly retract her false claim. There are many other false claims as well. This is why many people have a problem with her and her management team.
“Women chess players are so much more beautiful than women tennis players!”
But I love women tennis players! Especially the ones with Adams apples and can pee while standing up.
