Rxd2 and it should be draw.
doesn’t Rc1 mate @@
I think 39. … rc2+
39 ..Rc1
40 Rd1..Rxd1
41 Bd1
and black wins because of extra material.
Rc1+ wins a piece.
A possible explanation: Hammer “saw” the expected 39.Bd2, preventing …Rc1+. When a piece materialized on that square, he kept …Rc1+ out of his mind, because he was relieved at the chance to enter an opposite-Bishops ending with some prayer of saving it.
Either that, or the piece Carlsen placed on d3 became a Troll, which combines the power of the Rook with the old Bishop which could move just one diagonal square :-).
Rc1+ looks like 0-1.
Ah, one square diagonally was the old Queen (or fyerz), not Bishop—the old Bishop hopped 2 squares diagonally.
Which makes sense: “old queen” = witch, Rook+Witch = Troll. Indeed, if Carlsen slicks down his hair and wears black as on his next modeling shoot, and Hammer grows some whiskers to match his frizz, they could resemble this illustration for tomorrow’s game :-)!
Rc1 wins on spot …
Hello
1. …. , Rc1+
2. Rd1 , Rxd1+
3. Be1 , Rh1+
4. K moves, Rhxe1 winning
Greetings from Spain
Doesn’t Rc1+ win a whole rook? Or am I missing something obvious?
Rxd2? What about Rc1 and white resigns?
Well, jeepers, it’s … Rc1, … Rc1, … Rc1. (1. … Rc1+ 2. Rd1 Rxd1+ 3. Be1 Rh1+ 4. Kf2 Rhxe1
After ChessBomb misposted the beginning of Polgar-Anand, I figured this one was amiss as well.
Rd1. And Magnus could give up after Rh1 from Hammer in the next move. Magnus made a terrible blunder. He should have played Bd2 instead of Rd2.
doesnt rc1+ win on the spot?
…Rc1+
Rd1 Rxd1
Be1 Rh1+
Kg2 Rhxe1
should win
Worlds Number One is World Champion Viswanathan Anand and the Highest Rated Player is Magnus Carlsen.
Susan, I think this is the easiest puzzle you ever published.
One does not expect such position by the number one…
1. Rc1+
2. Rd1 only move Rxd1+
3. Be1 omly move Rh1+
4. K anywhere Rhxe1
..and a rook and a Bishop up …
