POSTED: 3:27 p.m. EDT, October 11, 2006
NEW YORK (CNN) — An aircraft has crashed into the middle of a brick luxury high-rise residential building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue, police officials said.
The building is very close to the East River. There was no word on casualties as firefighters battled the flames that shot up from several windows in the middle of the building. The Federal Aviation Administration has said a “general aviation” aircraft had hit the building.
A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spokesperson, which monitors air traffic, told CNN that it had not been tracking the aircraft.

UPDATE:
First responders to the New York plane crash say an emergency call was made from the plane indicating a possible fuel problem.
New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre told CNN that the plane that was a Cirrus SR-20 registered to team pitcher Cory Lidle.
Let’s hope that it was a mechanical malfunction or pilot health issue and that casualties are minimal. I don’t think any of us who were here in NYC on September 11, 2001 can hear this kind of news without thinking of all the worst possible scenarios. What kind of world are we raising our children in?
i suspect topalov-danailov
Everybody panic!!!
Americans…
This happened because the pilot had too many trips to the bathroom…..!!!!!!
does this suddenly become a news channel????????
i guess this time it was not planed by your government. except the pilot was a korean and you can build up new lies for an attack of north korea.
but very unlikely, north korea has no oil.
Paranoid reaction. Americans…
You anonymous puke-bags: The news on this site is anything that Susan Polger decides to put on it. If you have nothing worthwhile to offer, why don’t you take you insulting diatribes and stuff them down your throats.
Mike D. (AMERICAN)
I like the fact that Susan puts breaking news events on her blog, Chess related or not. Even though I’m a Red Sox fan may Cory Lidle rest in peace. Very tragic indeed.
Reports on ESPNews is that there were some kind of fuel problem that led to the crash.
Wikipedia notes that 10-11-06 written upside down is 9-11-01
It’s Susan’s blog and she can post whatever she wants. Is that a difficult concept for some of you?
Susan please erase my last post, it was put there without my permission by my brother to embarrass me.
Thank you
Plane crashes are usually (9/11 aside) pilot error…
I have to wonder what kind of pilot he was to run out of fuel over NY city. Sounds, from reports, like he stalled the airplance too, no doubt from trying too hard not to come down in the middle of the city.
To the idiots complaining about paranoid Americans: Let’s see a couple of enormous landmark skyscrapers filled with your fellow countrymen come crashing down after being hit by airliners piloted by zombie, fascist Islamists and also filled with your fellow countrymen! How would you react to initial reports in the news that sensationally talk of airplanes hitting highrises!?
Grow a brain and some emotions you insensitive, intollerant idiots!
Its a big tragedy indeed.
But unskilled amateurs flying planes around major cities seems like a rather selfish self-indulgence, putting others needlessly at risk.
10-11-06 written upside down is not 9-11-01 but 90-11-01.
“Let’s see a couple of enormous landmark skyscrapers filled with your fellow countrymen”
We don’t have skyscrapers because we don’t need them.
Also, we don’t lead wars against other nations. If we did, I’d be ashamed of my country and apologizing to the world at every possible forum.
I want to apologize about calling your reaction “paranoid”. No intention in hurting anybodys feelings. Sorry.
The emotional wound of 9/11 is too fresh and its trauma still not elaborated.
I wasn’t aware when I wrote my comment.
