Pinoy IM beats American GM in US Chess tilt

Filipino international master (IM) Enrico Sevillano scored another win in the ongoing 2009 US Chess Championship by beating grandmaster (GM) Alexander Shabalov of the US in the fifth round at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis in Missouri, USA.

Marlon Bernardino of sports Website BilliardPhilippines.com reported that Sevillano vanquished Shabalov in 39 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Accepted, garnering a total of 2.5 points after the fifth round.

The Cebu native is now tied for 10th to 15th placers in the company of sixth-round opponent GM Jaan Ehlvest.

Meanwhile, GM Varuzhan Akobian and defending champion GM Yury Shulman toppled their respective rivals to share the top ranking with 4.0 points apiece.

Akobian crushed GM Ehlvest while Shulman demolished GM Joshua Friedel.
