Here is a picture of the legendary GM Oleg Romanishin versus the young star GM Cheparinov, Topalov’s second. This was taken during the 2007 European Championship. Many more pictures can be viewed at www.chessvibes.com. Special thanks to Peter Doggers for sharing them with us.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Romanishin is my hero.
Hi,Susan
Please take a look at the round 7 game between Kosintseva Tatania,as Black and Moser as White. How could white loose in this position?
I don’t think ‘legendary’ is correct.
It does not mean ‘nice’ or ‘old’ or even ‘I recognize his name’.
“Legend” A romanticized or popularized myth of modern times.
“Legendary” One that inspires legends or achieves legendary fame
Nonsense.
legendary
• adjective 1 of, described in, or based on legends. 2 remarkable enough to be famous.

By the way Susan, my surname is Doggers 😉
I agree with the first guy. Using legendary to mean the same as famous seems kind of unsatisfying, and cheapens it a bit. Teichmann is famous, Capablanca is legendary. All US presidents are famous, but Washington and Lincoln are legendary, Tyler and Pierce aren’t.
I think part of the difference is that I can think of things Washington and Lincoln did, but I can’t think of anything Tyler and Pierce did, apart from holding the office. None of their *deeds* are famous. Romanishin is an accomplished and venerable GM, but I don’t see him as a legend. I can’t think of anything specific he did. Never made it to the Candidates, never won the Soviet Championship. He’s an accomplished and venerable GM, sure, worthy of great respect. But a legend?
Come on Peter, even in Dutch legendary (legendarisch) means more than famous.
By your view Negi Parimarjan or Katrina Lahno are legendary.
Susan prefers to look at games
when one of her darlings is winning.
A few weeks ago she wrote in one of her posts about the leading ladies of chess now and in the coming years : Hou Yifan, Stefanova,Koneru, Lahno,…
she didn’t even mention the Kosintseva sisters, who are now 1 and 2 in the European Championship.
It also surprises me how little attention she pays to her own sister, who happens to be a Super
Grandmaster. A little bit jealous,
maybe ?
This is so obvious that you have to be blind not to notice it.
