Not sure about this, but I would think Kb5 threatening to gobble the a and b pawns. I don’t think that the black K can defend against both the passer and save those.
I don’t have the concrete lines, though.
Kb5 Kc7
Ka6 Kb8
d5
now black is forced to defend my d pawn. if black moves off b8 i take Kxa7 and if black contiues to take my d pawn i take blacks b pawn Kxb6 and then promote my a pawn. black cant get to my a pawn because my king will defend now that its on the b file.
wolverine
Kb5 and second move for white should be a4
and then it should be an easy win for white
Black can do much if white plays
1 Kb5..
2 a4 ..
I suppose it is much easier than that, if
1.Kb5 Kd6
2.Ka6 Kxd5
3.Kxa7 Kc5 and should be about equal.
1.Kd5 should win, if the king moves then the d pawn will advance, and if a6 you can move the a3 with the idea to penetrate with the king to the queenside
What about first playing d5?
So:
1. Kd5 Kd6
2. Kb5
What about first playing d5!?
So:
1. d5 Kd6
2. Kb5
8/p2k4/1p5p/8/2KP3P/8/P7/8 w – – 0 1
With 1.Kb5 white doesn’t get further then a draw:
1.Kb5 Kd6 2.Ka6 Kd5 3.Kxa7 b5 4.a3 Kxd4 5.Ka6 Kc5 6.Ka5 Kc4 7.Kb6 b4 8.axb4 Kxb4 9.Kc6 Kc4 is =
So white should try 1.Ke5, with a possible:
1.Ke5 Kc7 2.Ke6 Kd8 3.Kd6 h5 4.a4 and get the a- and b-pawn.
but with correct play black can draw, for example:
1.Ke5 b5 2.h5 a6 3.a3 a5 4.Kc5 b4 5.axb4 a4 6.b5 a3 and black will have perpetual checks on the white king.
Michele
michele your absolutly wrong Kb5 wins easily. obviously you dont understand end games.
Kb5 Kd6
Ka6 Kd5
Kxa7 b5
Ka6 Kc4
d5 c5
d6 Kxd6
Kxb5 Kd5
now the a pawn has no problem advancing
wolverine
The best I can find is Kb5 and winning with all the pawns gone and queening the h pawn.
White wins the a and b pawns and then goes for the black h pawn and queens the white h pawn. meantime. black has to get the white a pawn and is way too slow to get back to defend the h file.
d5 draws. It simply moves the white pawn closer to the black king so that black can win the pawn with fewer moves.
d5 basically throws away the pawn.
Kb5 Kd6
Ka6 Kd5
Kxa7 b5
Ka6 Kc4
d5 Kc5
d6 Kxd6
Kxb5 Kd5
your last move Kd5 is definitely not best. It moves away from the a pawn and blocks itself from the a pawn. Much better would be to move the h pawn up. and also if black moves toward the a pawn then white goes across to the h file.
But I do not want to criticize here. You have produced a totally won position.
I pointed out your error because I dont think we should make comments like.
“””obviously you dont understand end games.”””
That is a personal attack and is never needed on this blog. lets try to keep it to chess moves. Everyone who posts here is our friend. Let us talk to them as friends.
Kb5 Kd6
Ka6 Kd5
Kxa7 b5
Ka6 Kc4
d5 c5
d6 Kxd6
Kxb5 Kd5
a4 d6
b6 d7
b7 d6
a5 d7
a6
it doesnt matter where the black king moves whether its Kd5 or anwyhere else the white king is protecting the a pawn. shut your mouth unless you know what your talking about.
wolverine
I thought White had to play 1. Kd5. it looks like a win after that.
Kd5 Kc7
Ke6
and white wins.
geez wolverine, lighten up a bit. Chill my brother.
rastamann
1. Kd5 h5
2. a4 a6=
2. a3 a6
3. a4 Kc7
4. Ke6 b5
5. axb5 axb5
6. d5 Kd8=
6. Kd5 Kb6=
Rainer
1. a4 and black pawns are stucked… black will soon be out of moves, I think it is an relatively easy win by white
Michele, your mistake is the assumption that 4. a3 is a good move. It’s not. It loses a tempo without helping the a pawn advance.
4. Kb6 Kc4
5. d5 Kxd5
6. Kxb5
or
4. Kb6 b4
5. Kb5 Kxd4
6. Kxb4
and the a pawn is unstoppable.
Kb5 Kd6
Ka6 Kd5
Kxa7 b5
Ka6 Kc4
d5 c5
d6 Kxd6
Kxb5
Wolverine, your line is accurate, and your are also right that the next move is largely irrelevant for black. However, just shouting the fact does not help or inform anyone who comes here to learn a little more about chess. Endgames are subtle, and take a long time to appreciate. An explanation for why blacks next move would be more helpful.
It is true that the white king is protecting the a pawn, but that is not enough, since the black king can get to a8 and hamper promotion. The key is that the pawns on the other flank also need to be protected. If the black king heads for a8, the white king can amble over and pick off the black pawn on h6, allowing promotion of their own h pawn. If the black king heads for h4, then the a2 pawn strolls down for its coronation.
Of all of the moves available to black, Kd5 seems to me to lack a plan. Kc7 and Ke5 have a purpose, even if it is ultimately fruitless.
I enjoy this blog, and I would like it to remain a welcoming and tolerant place to discuss ideas, even if they are clearly wrong to those with more experience. I am sure that we are all a long way off understanding the game as deeply as Susan, and therefore have much still to learn!
All the best

its d5 not c5 typing obviously thats what was meant. are you one one those people that cant even understand the move if a typing mistake happen. this isnt a chess intruction book. im not here to explain every move to ibiciles like you. the point of the whole problem is white king going for the corner pawn a7 then getting b6 and black doesnt have enough time to stop whites a and d pawn . white king just protects the a pawn and its promoted. for black to promote his h pawn would require 10 moves to take whites pawn move his king out of the way and promote .once white deflects black with d6 then white has to take d6 or else it get promoted. when white captures d6 black captures b5 black pawn and now simply moves a4 and there is no way ever black can get to whites a pawn. whites king protects c4,c5,c6.
do the move asshole ill bet you any money you want white gets a promotion with the a pawn. d5 and d6 by white is crucial to whites plan because it delects the black king away and allows white to capture blacks b pawn and promote the a pawn. im clearly dealing with losers that cant see a good move or appreciate good moves if someone explained everything in minute detail. if someone hit some of you losers and dum azzes in the face with good moves you still wouldnt see them.
Kb5 Kd6

ill beat you in this positon arn vogel whoever the fuck you are. then when im done beating you on the board ill kick the shit out of you in person.
wolverine
once white deflects black with d6 then black has to take d6 or else it gets promoted. when black captures d6 white captures b5 black pawn and now simply moves a4 and there is no way ever black can get to whites a pawn. whites king protects c4,c5,c6.i got white and black turned around for those that should know what I meant but get anally renetetive that everything needs to be spelled properly.
wolverine
“its d5 not c5”
You wrote: “d5 c5”, so that would make two times d5 in a row, which is nonsense, too.
I don’t mind if you make a mistake. However, you insult others if they make a mistake, or even if you just think they made a mistake, and therefore you should be judged by exactly the same standards that you hold others up to, hypocrite.
“ibiciles like you”, “dum azzes”
Do you suffer from dsyxilea or however that’s spelled? Goes well with your illiteracy, you buffoon.
“do the move asshole ill bet you any money you want white gets a promotion with the a pawn.”
Which of course I did not contradict at all, as is evident in my post from January 25. The rest of your rant is therefore completely off the mark as well.
“ill beat you in this positon arn vogel whoever the fuck you are.”
Fine, wolverine, dyslexic illiterate self-professed chess genius. However, I challenged you to win that other position against me, titled “Painful endgame lesson!”. I posted a link to that position, all you need to do is click it. It’s really not my fault if you’re not smart enough to use a mouse button. You said c4 will win after whatever black does, I said it does not and you, the greatest moron of all, called me a moron for it. I now know that c4 loses after
1. Rb7+ Kg5
2. a7 Rf1+
3. Kg2 Rf2+
4. Kg1 f3
but if you can come up with moves other than Kg2 and Kg1 before playing c4 that won’t lose, you might have a chance.
If you really want to accept this challenge, then just state your move, I already stated mine (2. .. Rf1+). BRING IT ON! THE BALL IS IN YOUR COURT!
“then when im done beating you on the board ill kick the shit out of you in person.”
Some people might kick back, but then that’s what Shotokan and my thighs (30″ circumference) were made for. Baka. Soku. Zan.
1. Rb7+ Kg5
2. a7 Rf1+
3. Kg2 Rf2+
4. Kg1 f3
5.a8 promote g2
6.Kf1 Rf2
7.Re1 Re2
8. Kd1

2. a7 Rf1+
3. Kg2 Rf2+
4. Kg1 f3
5.a8 promote g2
6.Kf1 Rf2
7.Re1 Re2
8. Kd1
i have a queen your rook is nothing and im going to mate you in a few moves. now dont ever come back to this blog again. your banned. you lost the bet now go away for good you piece of dog crap.
wolverine
im not smart enough to know your referencing some other problem that was put on this site from weeks ago. were dealing with this current problem who is going to know your talking about something else. i just happened to remember you from the nakamura end game analysis. i would crush you in a game asshole. your no match for me. be clear you asswipe when you make a challenge. it doesnt suprise me you couldnt get this end game analysis because your not a clear thinking person. your just a below average wants to be good chess player but has no talent. you asshole you put more emphasis on spelling than on the actual concepts in end games. when you actually have one shred of talent punk then talk to me. your nothing but a joke. if i ever saw your fat ass i would land 50 punhces to you before you could even throw a punch you complete sack of dog shit.
wolverine
susan if you read these comments i feel bad you have to see this stuff. i appreciate these problems you put on and can try and behave better but some of these people just try and start things.
wolverine
1. Rb7+ Kg5
2. a7 Rf1+
3. Kg2 Rf2+
4. Kg1 f3
5.a8 promote Rg2
6.Kf1 Rf2
7.Ke1 Re2
8.Kd1
once again i typed R instead of K on line 7 which you would use as an excuse to say i didnt solve this problem. it doesnt matter to me because im right your wrong. now slink away to whatever hole you crawled from you degenerate creep. dont come back and post solutions anymore on this blog. just screw off and do us all a favour.
wolverine
if you keep attacking my king with your rook obviously im not going to play c4. c4 is played if after kg2 then rook plays Ra1. im saying this because your so fucking stupid you would actually bring up the c4 move even though i can just promote my a pawn easily. the c4 move is used if rook plays a1 attacking my a pawn and preventing it form promoting which is what most good players would play. then after Ra1 the c pawn is released down the board. if my a pawn is not attacked by the rook i just promote my a pawn move my king out of the wayfrom your useless attacks by the rook then anhilate you punk. how in the fuck could you actually think i would play c4 if you keep attacking my king and dont even bother with my a pawn. you really are the dumbest person on here.
wolverine
Hi wolverine you total clownish loser! 😀
You said c4 wins, I said it loses. I said it three times already.
Now I challenged you to prove it and suddenly you don’t want to play c4 at all. Why is that? Because you noticed you were wrong, and are a too cowardly loser to admit it.
“who is going to know your talking about something else.”
Because I posted links to that other post AND the comments page belonging to it, you clown.
“if you keep attacking my king with your rook obviously im not going to play c4.”
Thanks, that’s exactly what I was saying. Nice to hear that you agree with me now.
I will quote it here again because you’ve proven yourself to be too silly to click a link. This is from my post that caused you to call me a moron:
“After 5. c4 Rc2, white seems helpless to stop the mate Rc1#.”
I never said that there are no ways to stop the black mate, indeed i posted one way to do it:
“Rb7+ … a7 wins the game. I found another line where I thought black may be able to win or at least draw, but fortunately for white, this plan has a tiny hole, too:
1. Rb7+ Kg6
2. a7 Rf1+
3. Kg2 Rf2+
4. Kg1 f3
5. a8=Q Rg2+
6. Kf1 Rf2+
7. Ke1 Re2+
8. Kd1 g2
9. Rb6+ { clears the way for the queen } Kxg5
10. Qxf3!! g1=Q+
11. Kxe2″
This is from the very post that you called me a moron for. As you now agree with me that in this line 5. c4 is losing, as I said:
“After 5. c4 Rc2, white seems helpless to stop the mate Rc1#.”
I’m afraid that makes you a moron, too, moron. I included these quotes so you don’t need to follow any links, now all you have to do is print this post out and have your mommy read it to you.
“your banned. you lost the bet now go away for good you piece of dog crap.”
Actually, it’s not your decision who’s banned on this blog and who’s not. Judging by the number of rules violations, Susan Polgar would be better advised to ban you. I didn’t lose the bet because you didn’t accept the conditions. I quote from my original challenge:
“The only condition is that you play c4 at the first opportunity this is possible”
You didn’t agree to this condition, hence there is no bet. If I am a car dealer and offer you a Ford for $2000, and you only put some glass marbles on the table, there is no contract either. In fact, I’d laugh you out of the shop.
“it doesnt suprise me you couldnt get this end game analysis because your not a clear thinking person.”
Wow, that’s outright polite. I thought throwing baseless insults was all you were able to? Anyway, since you now agree with my analysis that 5. c4 is losing, I’m afraid you are not a “clear thinking person” either.
“if i ever saw your fat ass”
That’s why my stomach muscles are showing.
“would land 50 punhces to you before you could even throw a punch you complete sack of dog shit.”
Sure you will… I am a Karate practioner, my stats are 6′, 200lbs, LEAN, 19″ upper arm circumference, 30″ thigh circumference, 25″ shoulder width. I’m not a great sports ace, I was never good at most ball and endurance sports, but if there is one thing I’m able to do is deliver lightning fast punches and kicks thanks to the Ki training I received in Shotokan Karate when I was 13 years old. If you should ever come to Stuttgart, Germany, just stop by and I will show you. Just make sure that your insurance is in place.
i never ever said i would play c4 if you attacked my rook. i would play c4 only if you played Ra1. i never ever said i would definatly play c4. why would i play c4 if i can promote my a pawn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!. now you back out of the bet by saying i would play c4 no matter what. c4 was completly based on the fact that Ra1 was played. if it wasnt i would just promte my a pawn. if you ever wanna get it on man just say it. im in canada and ill break your head open asshole!!!!! i dont give a shit what you practice. ill rip you in half you moron. stupid german go fix your horrible economy then talk to me. your a joke. nothing but a weasal backing out of a bet. i knew youd do some lowlife thing like that. you think you can take me you better think again man. cuz ill fight you until i kill you!!!!
wolverine
three times are you kidding me. first of all your first time i didnt click anything because we were talking about the current problem not some problem form weeks ago. im supposed to know your referring to the nakamra end game from a few weeks ago and you dont even mention what your talking about. if your referencing something other than the problem being played then be clear about it moron!!!!!!!!!! secondly i havnt been back to the nakamura end game problem so that doesnt count either. the first time i heard you mention c4 i gave you a solution. your just a low life.
wolverine
white wins with kb5 take both the a and b pawns. White’s a pawn will promote and have black as butter in a warm bread for breakfast! 🙂
