Pattonville chess team wins tournament

The Pattonville High School chess team won the first-place team trophy at the inaugural Pattonville High School Chess Tournament in January after competing against 19 teams from the St. Louis region. More than 220 students in grades 1-12 participated in the tournament.

Several Pattonville players won individual honors. In addition to winning first place overall, Isaiah Gadson earned the third-place trophy on Board 1; Jimmy Sorsen won the first-place trophy on Board 3; Thomas Haake secured the second-place trophy on Board 4; and Jason Jiang claimed the seventh-place trophy on Board 4.

Brett Cole was awarded a medal for his three wins in four rounds on Board 4. Other players contributing to the success of the day were Ethan O’Dell, Nick Huber and Christine Gardner. Sorsen and Haake both finished with a perfect four wins in four games.

The team is coached by Janet Baldwin.
