Posted on Thu, Dec. 20, 2007

For the second time in two years, Miami Dade College’s chess team, led by captain Renier Gonzalez, will host the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Tournament, scheduled for Dec. 27-30.

Teams expected to participate include powerhouses like the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, as well as Yale, John Hopkins, Stanford and the University of Chicago, along with teams from Canada and the Caribbean.P

The tournament is a prelude to the Final Four of Chess, often referred to as the World Series of Collegiate Chess. For the past five years, the MDC team has placed third in the championship.

”My first goal is to qualify for the Final Four. Then I want to improve our third-place standing,” said Rene Garcia, MDC’s team advisor.

Besides Gonzalez, who is on the way to attaining Grand Master ranking, other MDC players include Liulia Cardona, who was the second best-female chess player in Cuba before coming to the United States a year ago, Charles Galofre and Javier Gonzalez.
