1)c4 Nb6 2)c5 Nc4 3)Qa4 d5 4)b3
1)c4 Nb6 2)c5 Nd5 3)e4
Well, perhaps the “trick” is that white can play 1e4 without fear and gain a tempo because 1… Nxe4 loses.
But white is a pawn down and the question is if he has enough compensation after, say, 1 … Nb5 2. e5 Ne4.
I am not good enough to judge this but it seems white may conceivably have enough for the pawn.
2. … Nd5 loses a piece to3.c4. Is that the “opening point” intended?
Fritz 6 seems to think 1.c4 is stronger, and gives white a slight plus.
But I don’t really see the point in the position.
Ah!
1. c4 Nb6 2. c5 Nbd5 (2… Nc4 3. Qa4 +-) 3. e4 wins a piece for two pawns.
I see Ashoka and anonymouse both beat me to it. I guess I should read the comments more carefully.
