Fide World Chess Championship 2013 live: Viswanathan Anand vs Magnus Carlsen level at 1-1

The second game of the ‘2013 FIDE World Chess Championship’ between the reigning world champion Viswanathan Anand of India and current world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has ended in a draw.

The 22-year old Norwegian chess grandmaster surprised the world champion by opting for opted for Caro Kann defense. The second game, which ended in just 25 moves, took place in Chennai, India on November 10, 2013.

The opening game on Saturday lasted for 90 minutes after ending in a draw. The second game went to a draw in mere 66 minutes, which is 24 minutes shorter than the opening game.

In the second game, Carlsen played out a tame draw against Anand with white pieces. Viswanathan Anand said that he was quite surprised to see Carlsen going for Caro Kann defense. Carlsen has not played with the classical line of Caro Kann with black pieces ever before.

While Anand did a great job in the first game, Carlsen dominated the second game largely. The opening and variation chosen by Carlsen surprised Anand literally. Play the 2nd game here.

During the game, the current world champion spent quite some time in thinking about different complex variations. Both the players repeated the moves in the same pattern and the result was a draw.

After Anand has faced Carlsen’s surprise opening, he will need to find new options to decipher the Caro Kann. After these two shot draws, chess enthusiasts will hate to see a three-fold repetition in the third game, which will take place on Tuesday. In total, there will be 12 games and the winner will receive Rs. 14 crore as prize money.
