Open GM Chess tournament to kick off at Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, Apr 12 (UNI) For the first time an international open Grand Master Chess tournament would be held here from June 7 to 14 to help the Oriya players raise their ratings and bring them to limelight.
Orissa Chess Association Ad-hoc Committee Convenor Manoj Panigrahi told newspersons here that the main objective of the tournament is to give a platform to the Oriya chess players to play with the GMs at an affordable price and help them raise their ratings.
Mr Panigrahi said around 400 players, including 20 grand masters and 40 international masters from fifteen countries including India, are expected to participate in the tournament.
The 400 players included 150 from Orissa, he said.
Mr Panigrahi said players are expected from Ukraine, Kazikstan, Russia, Armenia, Sri Lanka, Iran and Vietnam.
Coach cum GM Georgy Timoschenko and Dimitriov Kumorov GM both from Ukraine have already given their consent to participate in the tournament, he said.
He said all total 102 prizes worth Rs 10 lakh would be distributed as prize money to the players.
Provision had been to award twenty players of Orissa with a cash prize of Rs 3,000 to each of the player.
International arbiter will conduct the event alongwith an entire professional team.
From Orissa among others IM Sekhar Chandra Sahoo, IM Satya Pragyan, more than ten times state Champion K D Pilay, state Champion Manoj Panigrahi, National-B Women B Champion Kiran Manisha Mohanty, World Under 14 chess champion Padmini Rout are expected to participate in the tournament.
The tournament is fourth of its kind in the country after Delhi, Mumbai and Gurgaon.

Seems Indian players will have to travel all over the world to even get a minimum prize money….but on postive side the tournaments in mumbai, gurgaon, bhuvaneswar have all started recently but have less prize money. seems there are sponsers for chess in india recently.
Very good news for all of us,I mean the peoples of Orissa.I will definitely try to witness the last three rounds of the tournaments if there is no broadcast.In case there will be Live games like Parsvanth and Gurgaon,then it will be appreciated by all.
