EDMOND — Close to 250 chess players from 60 schools battled on chessboards this weekend at Ida Freeman Elementary School.

“That makes it the largest chess tournament ever played in Oklahoma,” said David Nichols, Ida Freeman chess coach.

Students from all grade levels competed in the Scholastic State Grade Championships. Students played only in their grade level.

Ida Freeman students earned team first places in the fifth- and third-grade categories, Nichols said. A team’s score comes from the top three scores of its players.
