Providence Oathotse on Sunday walked away with P1000 cash after winning the Botswana Closed Chess tournament held at the University of Botswana.

The event was a fundraiser for the Botswana Chess federation towards the African youth event that would be held in Zambia next week.

P13,500 was raised from donations by players, while chess player and business man, Jona Chaka donated P5000 towards the prizes for the weekend event.

Zimbabwean chess maestro Dion Moyo took P750,00 for finishing 2nd, while woman player Rosang Nthite, after scoring 5.5 points took P500 as the best woman performer at the event.

For Oathotse, however, the event capped a fine performance when he finished the tournament unbeaten, with 8.5 points out of a possible 9 points. Seventy players took part in the event held at the University of Botswana.

Meanwhile the chess community is mourning the unexpected passing away of its long time servant, Muza Muskwe, who fell and drowned in a sweeping pool at Legae academy over the weekend, during a nigh out.

Botswana Chess Federation secretary General Kelapile Kelathilwe confirmed the sudden departure of Muskwe on Sunday, and added that he had been to the morgue that afternoon to see his body.

Muskwe served as tournament director for the Botswana Chess Federation at an early age, after he was identified for that role by the former BCF Secretary General, Patrick Wanda in the mid 2000’s.
