CHESS SERIES (Sunday) The Chess and Checkers House in Central Park has frequently been used for just about everything but chess and checkers — it’s been a visitors’ center and a card shop — but Renée Yarzig, who runs nonprofit chess programs, is trying to return it to its original purpose. At each event in her new Summer Chess Lecture/Simul Series there, a grandmaster will give a talk about chess and then take part in what is called a simul: boards will be set up for participants, and the grandmaster (Susan Polgar on Sunday) will move from board to board, playing one move at a time. But while the simul is limited to the first 30 players with a rating of 1,000 or more who register, there will be other opportunities to play: This Sunday’s event will be combined with Ms. Yarzig’s Cross-Generation Chess Program, which brings together children and elderly adults for games, lunch, live classical music (this time by the pianist Roy Eaton) and, most important, conversation.
