9-year-old Negrense tops chess blitz in US

Nine-year-old Escalante-born Alekhine Nouri, the current youngest FIDE Master in the world, made his home province proud once again after winning the title in the 24th Annual North American Open under 1900 (U1900) Blitz section held December 29 at Bally’s Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nouri, who turned nine on December 12, 2014, has a current FIDE rating of 1617 and USCF rating of 1850. He completed the blitz race with 9.0/10 points, 9 wins and 1 loss, to earn the USD 400 top prize.

Nouri also had won 8 by finishing a tie for third to ninth places in the Standard U1900 section of the tournament. He is currently in the Carlson Chess Club undergoing training and is being supported by Filipino community in Los Angeles.

The awardee of 2014 Philippine Sports Association (PSA) is the son of Ahmed Nouri, who married Rhoda Sabordo Fabiosa Nouri of Brgy. Balintawak, Escalante City, now residing in Cavite.

Ahmed,a FIDE Master himself, was a protegee of the late Bro. Rolando Dizon, FSC, former president of University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.

Alekhine became the youngest FIDE Master at age 7 after his victory in the Open 8-under category during the 14th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships in Thailand on June 2013.

He received a full scholarship from Far Eastern University where he is as a member of the school’s elementary chess team. He is also part of the Philippine chess team.*PNA
